A Commentary on the Empowerment of Hayagriva. A Commentary on the Empowerment of Hayagriva. A commentary on the empowerment of Hayagriva, entitled "The Ladder Guiding the Fortunate to the Path of Liberation." Having preceded with bathing, dispelling obstacles, and meditating on the protective circle, now, in order for all sentient beings, as infinite as the extent of space, to easily attain the state of perfect Buddhahood, receive this sequence of ripening empowerments properly, and ultimately accomplish hearing, thinking, and meditating. Please keep this firm commitment in mind and listen attentively. Just as a vessel for containing excellent essence like nectar needs to be washed beforehand, it is necessary to abandon the three faults and six stains of the vessel. The first is: not turning the ear, like a mouth-down fault; not keeping in mind, like a bottom-holed fault; mixing with afflictions, like a poisonous fault. And the six stains are: As stated by the teacher Vasubandhu in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Pride and disbelief, not seeking meaning, external distraction, gathering inward, and listening with weariness are the stains." Furthermore, there are five faults of not receiving the Dharma for listeners. What are they? They are: not receiving the words, not receiving the meaning, receiving without understanding the terms, receiving wrongly, and not receiving completely. The first is not receiving the words, saying that any similar words are acceptable, not paying attention to the wording, only paying attention to the meaning, so that if the words are wrong, the meaning will also go wrong. First, if you hold on to a word that is not wrong and think about it, a meaning that is not wrong will arise. The second is not receiving the meaning, only paying attention to the words, and not paying attention to the meaning. Even if you memorize a lot of Dharma, it will become parrot-like recitation. The third is receiving without understanding the terms, which refers to receiving without knowing the necessity, summary, and meaning of that Dharma. That Dharma will not benefit oneself or others. The fourth is receiving wrongly, even if the lama explains it honestly, saying that there is no such thing as genuine Dharma, and receiving it wrongly. The fifth is not receiving completely, only accepting the important ones and not accepting the small ones. If you do that, the Dharma will become headless and tailless.

Later, it is of no benefit to others. When first listening to the Dharma, one must thoroughly grasp the key points to the extent of one's understanding. In this way, abandon the impurities of listening to the Dharma. How should one listen? Listening to the Dharma with awareness, reverence, and respect is the best. Because one sees the conduct of the Dharma and the holy beings. Therefore, the special feeling of joy, delight, and purity that arises from it is pure faith. Because of fearing and dreading the suffering of samsara, the Dharma and the Guru are always inseparable from the mind, which is aspiring faith. When meeting the Guru and hearing the Dharma, having no doubt or hesitation about the Dharma and the Guru is confident faith. Whatever one does, whether it is listening, contemplating, or practicing the holy Dharma. No matter what obstacles arise, such as sickness, suffering, enemies, or evil spirits, they cannot interrupt it, which is irreversible faith. These four faiths are indispensable no matter which of the nine vehicles one enters, they are like keys, therefore, the three doors of body, speech, and mind should be peaceful, gentle, and respectful, as stated in the sutras and tantras. It should be taken with the means of application and supreme bodhicitta. That is, like this, thinking about the difficulty of obtaining a human body, one should study the Dharma without interruption. Thinking about the reasons for certain destruction, one should constantly generate renunciation and weariness. Thinking about the example of certain death, one should meditate on the profound meaning of emptiness when needed. First, it is difficult to be born in Jambudvipa, a country for practicing Dharma. It is difficult to obtain leisure and endowment. It is difficult to meet the Guru, the virtuous spiritual friend. It is difficult to enter the gate of the precious teachings of the Victorious Buddha. It is difficult to know the unsurpassed secret instructions without reversing them. It is difficult to abandon the ocean of suffering of samsara and go to the island of liberation and enlightenment. Now is the time to generate diligence and perseverance. If one does not practice now, it is impossible to have such complete favorable conditions in the future, therefore, one should abandon the affairs of this life like discarding a snake's skin and meditate on the profound meaning. As it is said in the Treasury of Precious Instructions: From a succession of adverse conditions, impermanence arises in the mind. Knowing cause and effect, abandon evil deeds like poison. With devotion, see the Guru as the Buddha. With certainty in the Dharma, joy in virtuous practice arises. With faith in the Sangha, one is led upwards.
