All lands are exhausted. When water merges into water, mouth water and nasal mucus flow. Likewise, when fire merges into fire, the mouth and nose become completely dry. The warmth at the ends of the body all disappears. Likewise, when wind merges into wind, the breath becomes rapid, and the limbs tremble. The eyes also roll upwards. Whoever experiences these signs, will not remain here but will go elsewhere. At that time, the guru's instructions should be blended into one's own being. Thus it is said. In the tantra it says: When the eliminating vital wind escapes, the body cannot support itself, and the waist becomes weak. The limbs become uncoordinated, and it is difficult to speak. The eyes roll back, and the breath is forced outwards. When the wind that generates radiance escapes, the body becomes dry, and dust accumulates in the mouth and nose. The muscles feel hot, the mouth is dry, and the smell of corpses is smelled. When the wind that separates essence and waste escapes, one does not take food or drink, and the body's strength disappears. When the wind that accompanies fire escapes, the body's warmth disappears from the extremities. When the wind of karmic destiny escapes, the body experiences much itching and twitching. The blood from the subtle channels gathers in the life channel. Thus it is said. At that time, appearances gather in this way. The external senses and memories gather dimly, like dusk. Awareness gathers in the center of the heart. One cannot speak or understand, and memory is lost. Then the blood of the body gathers and is forced into the heart from within the life channel. The mouth and eyes become pale. The breath is cut off to the length of a cubit. Then, when two drops of blood are forced in, the head nods, and the breath is cut off to the length of a fathom. Then, when three drops of blood are forced in, one hiccups, and the breath is cut off to the length of an arrow. Then, when the external breath ceases, awareness dwells in the center of the heart, fainting. Then, when the internal breath ceases, the Bardo of Dharmata arises. Thus it is said. Now, by firmly fixing all of these in the mind in sequence, it is like a person who, if entrusted with a royal decree, would not forget it for fear of punishment, or like a beautiful woman looking in a mirror and clearly seeing her own face. One will not forget for fear of falling into samsara, and it will be as easy to recognize as seeing a beloved friend when it descends upon one.

When the earth element is exhausted and the breath ceases, one experiences a momentary faint in the state of the alaya-vijñāna (ground consciousness). As soon as one awakens from this, the consciousness dissolves into the sky of the dharmadhātu (realm of reality). The sky of the peaceful dharmakāya (body of truth), empty and clear like a cloudless sky, free from any obscurations or coverings, dawns. Recognizing this and resting naturally in one's own nature without any artificiality, one is self-liberated into the great ground of original liberation within the primordial space of original purity (kadag). Then, in sequence, from the Root Tantra: "Herein is explained the bardo of dharmatā (reality). At the time of death, when the ashes are scattered, The consciousness dissolves into the sky. When the sky dissolves into clear light, All coarse and subtle appearances cease, The body of light possesses all faculties, It transforms like a body and its shadow. At that time, during the moment of light fragments, The wise seize the appearance with increasing awareness. The winds of movement arise from the increasing awareness, The rays of five-colored light appear indefinitely, Like patterns of rainbows." Thus it is said. Then, dissolving into the union of luminosity (yuganaddha): "The winds of entering and arising also, From the four directions, four corners, and six above and below. From those directions, the light gathers, The bodies of the five families also manifestly appear. Blue, white, yellow, red, and green, Appear together with their respective consorts. When perfected in their respective directions, With five, a hundred, ten, and so on, Clusters of thousands and hundreds of thousands, Through the thought of pure nature, Innumerable appearances beyond expression dawn." Thus it is said. The Tantra says: "At that time, sound and light converge like rain, The appearance of the body causes fear." Thus it is said. Following that, again, from the Union of Sun and Moon: "At that time, from one's own heart, a very subtle light arises. When the light of the clusters and the light of one's own heart connect, All those bodies connect and appear at the heart. At that time, one seizes it with one's own awareness and naturally abides in non-conceptual samādhi. Therefore, it is called awareness entering into light, and all those appearances are perceived as mere phantoms. On that thread of light from the heart, countless subtle bindus also appear." Thus it is said. Then, again, from one's own heart, a thread of light like a twisted colored thread arises. Then, a feeling arises as if those bodies are dissolving into one's own body. This is called light returning and dissolving into one's own awareness. At that time, practitioners will believe that mother and son have met.
