Collected Teachings of Garab Lawo Jamyang Tsering, JGLG9: 'Abridged from the Extensive Biography of Kunkhyen Dolpopa,' composed by Lhajey Tsen, the beginning is auspicious. Abridged from the Extensive Biography of Kunkhyen Dolpopa, composed by Lhajey Tsen, the beginning is auspicious. Abridged from the Extensive Biography of Kunkhyen Dolpopa, composed by Lhajey Tsen, the beginning is auspicious. Homage to Dharma Lord, the Omniscient One! The abridged biography of the Dharma Lord is as follows: Birthplace: Born in Pantshang, Dolpo, Ngari, into a family with both Nyingma and Sutra traditions. Ordained as a youth, he listened to many teachings from the learned Kyeuton Drakpa Gyaltsen in Lo and Sakya. Thus, 'In all my lives, all the wise ones, are those previously trained. In this life, just hearing once or twice, I know all the scriptures, wisdom like a glorious sun.' At the age of twenty-two, he began composing treatises. During the summer Dharma assembly above the northern gate of Choktri Tang, he taught all four difficult texts, and many came to listen and offer gifts. During the winter Dharma assembly, he traveled to U-Tsang, and was praised as 'like Dolpopa,' becoming a standard of excellence. Soon after, he received full ordination from the assembly of Khenchen Sonam Drakpa. From then until the age of thirty-two, he listened to teachings from many good lamas and practiced diligently. At thirty-three, he became the abbot of glorious Jonang Monastery, strictly observing retreats in summer and winter, emphasizing meditative absorption. In spring and autumn, he taught definitive meaning, the Five Sutras, the Ten Sutras, the Essence Five Sutras, the Essence Ten Sutras, the Five Commentaries on Mind of Tantra, the Twenty Treatises related to Maitreya, and the Collections of Reasoning, Praises, and Discourses composed by Arya Nagarjuna, all with extensive commentaries. He also gave various empowerments, oral transmissions, practices, and instructions. The great lama Tishi Kunga Gyaltsen of Sakya invited him to Sakya, where he requested teachings such as the Kalachakra. Upon returning to Jonang, Lama Rokpatsang gave him the empowerment of forty-four mandalas of Vajra Rosary and eleven mandalas of glorious Constellation. Sound and light appeared in the sky, and a rain of flowers fell. On the third day of the third month of the Horse year, he began construction of the Great Stupa, with a circumference of two hundred and fifteen cubits at the base, and a height of two hundred and fifteen cubits from the foundation to the pinnacle. On the tenth day of the tenth month of the Bird year, the umbrella was consecrated. It took approximately four years to complete.

During the consecration ceremony, wondrous signs appeared: the earth shook, sounds echoed in the sky, a rain of flowers fell, and various rays of light emerged, spreading his fame in all directions. From every direction, people offered objects of Karu Ma (karu ma), and many skilled artisans gathered. Eventually, it was determined who would be the patrons of each temple. As the consecration ceremonies were performed in order, wondrous signs also appeared in sequence. At that time, there was a person named Jodan Gyalwa Jangsem (jo gdan rgyal ba byang sems), who was as virtuous as an Arhat. He was in charge of the construction of the Kumbum (sku 'bum), overseeing the masons, carpenters, blacksmiths, coppersmiths, casters, painters, and one-third or one-fourth of the artisans. When he saw the Dharma Lords (chos rje) of each craft arriving simultaneously, he said to some people that if he were to pretend to be a lama for personal gain, may the Three Jewels be his witness to what he had seen with his own eyes. In those times, practitioners also saw non-humans building the Kumbum at night, just as people perform virtuous deeds during the day. In this way, he gradually accomplished the benefit of others. At the age of seventy, during the autumn teachings of the Monkey year, many teachers gathered, but before the lama from Sakya (sa skya) arrived, he explained the five-day preliminary rituals in detail, as if giving his last will. During this time, he often looked up at the sky, seeing many Gyalwas (rgyal ba) and Bodhisattvas coming to greet him. He instructed that a retreat be held at the Ado ('dod) temple and said, 'Be sure to complete the remaining part of the ocean of definitive meaning well.' When he said he was going to the Kumbum, everyone pleaded with him not to go, so he was invited to the four-pillared chamber of the Labrang (bla brang). He was very pleased and showed no signs of illness, passing away peacefully on the evening of the sixth. At that time, the mortuary was filled with fragrance and various musical sounds, which must have been the offerings of the gods. On the morning of the seventh, when they looked at the body, they saw white semen flowing from above and red blood flowing from below. As the scriptures say, 'When sentient beings die, the nectar of the moon flows downward, the sun's dust Rahu rises upward, from the urna hair of all Buddhas, on the lotus is the nectar of the moon, the sun's dust hides in the sky.' This was an extraordinary sign beyond the ordinary. On the night of his passing, the practitioners saw the Dharma Lord appear as Avalokiteśvara, riding a mule, a white horse, or a white lion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
