Those who have become of the Mahayana lineage, although they know samsara as an impure pit, they cannot bear to see sentient beings, like a beloved and pitiable only child, dwelling in the impure pit of samsara, and with compassion, they remain in samsara to benefit sentient beings. As it is said in the chapter of the old man who lost his son: A father and son wandered in the wilderness, and the father found the way, and one foot had already stepped inside his own threshold. When it was enough to withdraw one foot, he remembered his son and returned to the wilderness to look for him. Similarly, knowing all existence as like a wilderness, and thereby generating a mind of renunciation, in order to achieve one's own liberation, one foot is withdrawn, and it seems as if it has stepped inside the door. But at that time, unable to bear the sight of sentient beings, like a son, wandering in samsara, which is like a wilderness, one enters the wilderness of samsara to benefit sentient beings. Also, as it is said in the chapter of the house on fire blown by the wind: Fleeing from a house on fire blown by the wind, one foot has come out. Now, when one foot is withdrawn, one can be liberated, but remembering that his wife and children are left behind, he returns to rescue his wife and children. Similarly, knowing all existence as like a house on fire blown by the wind, and thereby generating a mind of renunciation, in order to achieve one's own liberation, one foot is withdrawn, and it seems as if one has come out. But at that time, unable to bear the suffering of sentient beings, like a wife and children, in samsara, which is like a house on fire blown by the wind, with compassion, one enters that very samsara to liberate sentient beings. Furthermore, according to the way the first line of the root verse is recited, "By the suffering belonging to one's own continuum," the Bodhisattva endures the suffering belonging to his own continuum alone until samsara is empty, wishing to bring an end to the suffering of all sentient beings. This meaning is stated in the Sutra of the Noble Vajra Banner and the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence: The beings of the four continents do not each have their own light, nor does a sun rise before each one. When a single orb of the sun rises, it dispels the darkness of all the beings of the four continents, allowing them to engage in their own activities.

Just as making fruits ripen and so on, it is not that all sentient beings are able to liberate themselves, nor is it that a Bodhisattva appears before each and every being to benefit them, but rather the Bodhisattva himself, uniquely and inseparably, benefits sentient beings and establishes them in liberation. To understand and commit to this is the way of all Bodhisattvas. A Bodhisattva, like the moon, does not choose opportunities in other realms. A Bodhisattva is not a person of great desire, and the commitment of the noble Manjushri is also the same, so we ourselves must also train our minds in this way. As the verse says: Like a whale or a majestic elephant, One does not think of whether to split the brain and destroy it. The boundless and vast ocean, One does not think of whether one can support the wheel of the earth. Thus thinking. So, in whom do these two thoughts arise? They arise in the cub of a lion and the son of a Chakravartin king. Similarly, to generate a mind like the former, wanting to liberate from samsara those stubborn sentient beings who are like proud elephants filling the expanse of the sky, and to establish them in the state of perfect and complete enlightenment, one must also be someone who has become a Mahayana lineage holder. Regarding lineage, there are many teachings on the differences of the six elements, on the nature of reality, and on the roots of virtue, but the differences of the six elements are not fixed. The nature of reality pervades all sentient beings, but merely having it does not become the cause for generating the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, first, with the power of lineage, Awakening the seed of compassion, Perfecting the practice and intention, One fully grasps the mind of enlightenment. Like this, one needs to awaken the lineage. For this, one needs to have relied on a Mahayana virtuous friend from many lifetimes ago, trained the mind in the stages of the three types of individuals, and accumulated immeasurable merit. Therefore, the lineage spoken of in terms of the roots of virtue is the definitive meaning. As for the measure of awakening the lineage, Before the practice, there is compassion, Faith, and also patience, Rightly practicing all virtuous deeds, Know this to be a sign of lineage. Like this, one is able to discern the signs of lineage. In short, the main thing of the Mahayana lineage.
