The characteristics of a supreme being. The characteristics of a supreme being. The characteristics of a supreme being, who is the basis for practicing the path, are: Through the suffering of realizing one's own continuum, whoever desires all the sufferings of others to be completely and truly exhausted, that person is supreme. It is said. Previously, in the case of the lesser and intermediate persons, having established the suffering of the lower realms and samsara in one's own continuum, due to realizing that these are indeed suffering, beings fear the suffering of the lower realms and samsara. Judging from one's own experience, whatever sentient beings experience the suffering of the lower realms and samsara, one cannot bear the suffering of others, and with compassion, one desires that their suffering be exhausted. Moreover, it is not just one aspect of suffering, but one desires that all forms of suffering be exhausted. Placing them in the gods and humans of the desire realm, the suffering of the lower realms is temporarily exhausted, or placing them in the bliss of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, although the suffering of samsara is exhausted, it is not merely desiring the temporary exhaustion of suffering, such as having to make efforts to practice the Great Vehicle path from the very beginning. Rather, one desires that all suffering be completely and truly exhausted from the root and placed in Buddhahood, desiring this from the depths of one's heart and bones. That person, among the three stages of a person, is called a supreme being. The way to learn such characteristics of a person is also taught by the great Sharawa: It is not enough for oneself to be liberated from samsara; one must recognize all beings as one's parents. If one desires that all sentient beings be liberated from the suffering of samsara, then one is called a supreme being. If one has such a mind, then one will generate bodhicitta and so on. As the elders of Gongmo said, in order to liberate all sentient beings from the suffering of samsara, one must attain the state of Buddhahood. The cause of that is bodhicitta. That arises from compassion. That arises from loving-kindness. That arises from knowing and repaying kindness. That arises from knowing all sentient beings as one's mother. Therefore, all of these must be cultivated gradually. And that is also cultivating the true nature, not conceptual constructs, as Jowo said: In the sutra of beginningless samsara, there is no end to each sentient being not having been the mother of each other.

It is also said that the number of great lands made as small as mustard seeds is also very large. The kindness done by fathers and others is also the same. This sutra has not been translated into Tibetan. It is said that all the lands of yogis contain the meaning of this sutra. When approaching in this way, one should also contemplate how great the kindness is, thereby knowing and repaying the kindness to all sentient beings, and cultivate the loving-kindness that arises from the root of knowing and repaying kindness. Moreover, this is the oral instruction transmitted from the master Serlingpa, which makes it easy to generate loving-kindness, so cultivate it gradually. First, start with the root mother, gradually expand the object of focus, and when cultivating, first think like this: this mother of mine, when I was first born, was like a worm, unable to support my own neck, unable to move up and down, and unable to reach my hands and feet, but she raised me to be as big as a yak and showed me the beauty of Jambudvipa. Then, just like coming out of a hermit's hut or like coming out of a snake's skin, she gave everything to her son, while the mother herself curled up like a small gatehouse. Thinking of this, one should generate a mind of cherishing the mother. Similarly, all sentient beings have also been one's own mother and have raised oneself in this way; fathers and all relatives have also protected oneself from various harms and have raised oneself with various benefits. Remembering these kindnesses, generate a mind of cherishing them. Cultivating loving-kindness in this way, thinking of those sentient beings who desire happiness and comfort, but are in samsara, suffering immeasurable pain, inferring from one's own experience, cultivate compassion in the way of "I cannot bear the suffering of others." Moreover, it is said in the Mahayana sutras that this has been determined by many people. As it is said in the Noble Sagaramati Sutra: When the only son of a householder, who is lovely and pleasing, falls into a pit of impurity, his mother and other relatives cannot bear it, beating their breasts and wailing, circling around the pit, but they themselves cannot enter the pit to rescue him. But the father does not weep or anything like that, but enters the pit and rescues the son. Similarly, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas only feel unbearable that sentient beings are in a pit of impurity like samsara, but they themselves cannot be in samsara to do the benefit of sentient beings.
