Having stayed, Nāropa (那若巴) had all his flesh and bones turn white like copper. Everything dissolved into the ground of being, fleeing to Khaṃtsa ru. Tailopa (帝洛巴) came and touched him with his staff, and he revived. Again, on one occasion, Tailopa said to Nāropa: 'Go and fetch the king's consort.' Nāropa went to summon her, and involuntarily seized the king's consort and took her away. Her attendants thought it was for the sake of the lama, and he was saved. Again, on one occasion, he came carrying the king's consort, and Tailopa said: 'Is there anyone who can touch her?' Nāropa thought he was being told to do so, and touched her, and was beaten by the king's attendants. Then Tailopa came and touched him with his staff, and he revived. Again, on one occasion, he came carrying the minister's wife, and Tailopa said: 'Is there anyone who can touch her?' Nāropa thought he was being told to do so, and touched her, and the minister's attendants cut off all four of his limbs. Just as he thought he would not recover, Tailopa came and said: 'What is your offense?' He replied: 'I touched the minister's wife, and they cut me.' Then Tailopa joined all four of his limbs and touched him with his staff, and he revived. He said that in all of that, he did not have even a moment of disbelief in the lama. Thus, Nāropa stayed for twelve years, practiced twelve hardships, and served him. Thinking that he should ask for empowerment and instructions, he offered a maṇḍala (曼扎) with his own blood and requested them. He said that his own awareness itself was wisdom, and that there was nothing to show Tailopa. He did not grant it. Again, on one occasion, he prostrated and circumambulated, and requested that he be taken care of. He glared back and forth, took off his shoes, picked them up, and hit him on the brow. As soon as Nāropa awoke, all four classes of tantras (密咒), complete with words and meanings, were piled up in his mind. In particular, he said that he directly bestowed the instructions on the letter A (藏文:ཨ,梵文天城体:अ,梵文罗马拟音:a,汉语字面意思:无). There, I also did some service, and the lama also took it to heart, blessed me, and thinking that the purpose was accomplished, I was about to leave. Then, I thought, 'The lama has both the instructions for explanation and the instructions for practice. I should ask whether it is explanation or practice.' So I returned and asked. He poured something that looked like brain vapor into skulls, and gave me a human rib, saying, 'Nāropa, eat this and understand the meaning.' Then he left. When I ate it, it was a taste I had never experienced before, a taste with a hundred flavors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When something very delicious appeared, Nāropa thought: 'The excrement in the skull and the ribs of a human are impure substances, but through blessing, they become very delicious. Similarly, if one does not practice Dharma, it is like an impure substance; if one meditates, it is like that impure substance being blessed.' He thought this was an indication for him to meditate. At that moment, the Guru said: 'Your understanding is only as you think it is.' After that, Nāropa prostrated outwards, and on the way as he departed, he came to a large city. People said: 'This yogi is very good!' and made many offerings. There, he found a tray full of pearls. He was very happy and went before the Guru. The Guru was also very kind, and he also wanted to offer these meager offerings to the Guru. The Guru thought: 'This Nāropa is still not good enough.' In order to destroy Nāropa's pride, the Guru sat on a huge pearl throne. Guru Tilopa, who completely possessed the treasury of the mind, thought: 'I have nothing to be surprised about such things.' So he threw the pearls into the mandala and then left. On the way back home from Guru Tilopa, Nāropa came to another city, which was a city of coppersmiths. He rested there, and the next morning he got up early to practice. A small coppersmith thought: 'Has it dawned?' and started hammering. All the coppersmiths started hammering with a 'ding ding dang dang' sound, and Nāropa felt uncomfortable meditating and became disgusted. He thought many times about whose fault it was, and thought it was his own fault. At that moment, he cut off the root of hatred, recognized ignorance, recognized that it was unborn, and recognized that it was the Guru's kindness. He said: 'At that moment, I cut off the root of Dharma.' After that, he went to the glorious Nālandā. At that time, the monastery there needed four paṇḍitas to guard the four gates. The east was guarded by Vāgīśvarakīrti, the south by Prajñākara, the west by Ratnākaraśānti, and because there was no paṇḍita to guard the north gate, the king requested Nāropa to take the position. Nāropa thought: 'What to do?' The Guru had said: 'Do not be a tutor paṇḍita guarding the four gates.' But he thought that this matter was of great significance, and it would be okay to do it, so he agreed. The king placed him on his head, gave him empowerment, and taught him the Dharma, doing both. After that, one time, a Tirthika came to the north gate to debate. On the first day, Nāropa did not defeat him, and the Tirthika won. The monks were worried about losing their residence, so Nāropa prayed to Guru Tilopa that night. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
