The Collected Teachings of Gampopa GM1: The Biography of Tilopa Naropa by Je Gampopa. 1-1-1a (A) The Biography of Tilopa Naropa by Je Gampopa. The Biography of Tilopa Naropa by Je Gampopa. 1-1-1b Homage to the Guru, Vajradhara, and the assembly of Dakinis! I shall briefly recount the qualities of the precious lineage Gurus. In general, there are two types of instructions for practitioners: transforming the cause into the path, which is the Paramita-yana lineage from Jowo Je Lha-gcig, and transforming the result into the path, which is the Secret Mantra Vajrayana lineage from glorious Naropa. In both Tibet and India, practitioners especially seek these two lineages. Generally, for those who explain the Sutras and Tantras, it is necessary to praise the qualities of the speaker, the Buddha, and the commentators. Practitioners, however, should cultivate faith by practicing the qualities of the lineage Gurus and supplicate them with reverence, thereby pleasing them. The speaker of the Tantras is the great Vajradhara. For sentient beings with the highest faculties and pure perceptions, he emanates in the Sambhogakaya form of Vajradhara and benefits them through these appearances. For those with middling or lower faculties, he emanates as Shakyamuni Buddha and benefits sentient beings according to their needs, teaching the Lakshana-yana. For those with the highest faculties, he emanates as Vajradhara and teaches the Secret Mantra Vajrayana. His mind emanation is the compiler, Vajrapani. As stated in the Samputa Tantra: 'I am the one who teaches the great Dharma, I am the teacher in the assembly, and I am also the compiler.' The one who directly heard the teachings was Tilopa, whose birthplace was in the east, Zahor. He possessed immeasurable qualities that cannot be fully described and was an emanation. However, sometimes he appeared as Tilopa himself, sometimes as a Bhikshu, sometimes alone as Tilopa, sometimes he emanated as hundreds and thousands of Tilopas, and sometimes he appeared as a naked yogi. He was an emanation inseparable from Vajrapani. He himself said: 'Naropa, who obtained the Unforgettable Dharani, relied on me for twelve years. Future sentient beings who seek the Dharma should read my biography.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'It is with Tārā. If you want realization, drink it there. With hundreds of millions of emanations, I have spoken with Śākyamuni, Nāgārjuna, and Āryadeva, among others, and I have also seen the truth of Dharma nature.' He said. Tailopa's son was Nāropa, who was born in Śrī Nāgara in the west. From the beginning, he was skilled in the five sciences. While he was practicing the seven-letter mantra in a solitary place, a Ḍākinī named Khāḍākīma prophesied in a dream: 'Son of lineage, go to the east, where there is a yogi named Tailo Sherab Zangpo, and request the instructions of Mahāmudrā.' Then, without writing down the place where he was, he went to the east and asked all the monks: 'Have you seen a yogi named Tailopa?' All the monks said: 'We have not seen a yogi named Tailopa, but there is someone here named Mutopa Tailopa.' Then, he went to the gate of the monastery, and saw a yogi wearing ragged clothes, with a red face, holding four or five live fish in his left hand and firewood in his right hand, roasting the fish in the fire during the monks' meal. The monks did not believe him, and said: 'What is this guy doing in our meal?' They took sticks and were about to beat him, but Tailopa said: 'If you don't like it,' and snapped his fingers and left, and the fish flew alive into the sky. Then, Nāropa thought: 'This is amazing, this person must be Tailopa.' All the monks knew that he was an accomplished one, and prostrated to him three times, asking for forgiveness. The lama accepted everyone's repentance. Then, Nāropa thought: 'This must be Tailopa, without a doubt.' Then, Nāropa prostrated to the lama three times, placed his head at his feet, and said: 'I was prophesied to come here, please liberate me from samsara.' He said nothing, and left, and Nāropa followed him. Then, they came to a bamboo grove, and Tailopa fell into a sandpit, and a bamboo branch pierced his body, and he looked naked at Nāropa and left. Nāropa asked him to stay, but he said nothing and left. Three days later, Tailopa came and said: 'Where are you?' Nāropa replied like ashes, and Tailopa touched his body with his hand, and he immediately revived, and was named Nāropa.
