The body of the wrathful Naga demons. Extremely wrathful, the Nāga Rakshasa. By offering the sacred substance of incense, pacify the harm of the earth lords and Nagas. This was also compiled by the Fifth Dzogchen Incarnation, Thubten Chokyi Dorje, who gathered the concise incense offerings to the Dharma-protecting guardians into one place, may virtue and excellence increase. The method of examining the goodness or badness of incense is: smoke, fire, and ash, three things. The first examination is the smoke: white, like a spear planted upright, is good. Auspicious, free from illness, and calamities are averted. If the smoke is dark brown and goes downwards, it is difficult for the sick person to recover, even if they don't die. If the smoke is dark brown and goes downwards and to the west, if it goes away, calamities will come; if it comes, the sick person will die. It is said to be bad because hail and frost will come. If the smoke is black, the sick person will die. If it is blue, there will be epidemics and the year will not be good. The sign of the fire is that if it burns upwards, it is a sign of Brahma and the gods. It is good and the gods will be pleased. If it burns to the east, it is said to be a good sign of the gods. If it burns to the south, it is good because it increases human prosperity. If it burns from the west, it is bad because it opens the door to the cemetery. If it burns from the north, it is bad because it opens the door to the enemy. If it burns downwards, it is bad for attendants and wealth. White ash is good, and red ash indicates that calamities will come and it is bad for young women. If the wealth deity is expelled, it is good. The size of the black spots is related to the charcoal of the incense and the large fire and smoke. The small deities are frightened by the sight of the fire spreading, and it is said that faults will occur. On the first day of the tiger month, wounds, shadows, and virulent diseases will arise. On the sixth, sixteenth, and twenty-sixth days, making incense offerings on the mountaintop will displease the field deities, and it is said that the year will not be good. Other than that, incense offerings bring auspiciousness, timely rainfall, a good year, the pacification of diseases for humans and livestock, and the aversion of calamities. Whatever is wished for will be accomplished without hindrance. There is no need to worry about prohibitions regarding regular incense offerings. Thus, this compilation of incense offerings that can be recited in one place is because in the past, incense texts were not compiled into one volume, resulting in various different texts appearing. In gatherings and other occasions, it seems somewhat inconvenient to recite. Therefore, at the repeated urging of Khenpo Sonam Chö and other interested individuals, and with my own desire to do so, I have based it on the existing texts and supplemented it with parts composed by Jamgön Mipham Rinpoche, and I myself have also newly composed some parts to supplement it. This completion of reciting the extensive, intermediate, and concise incense offering rituals is for the benefit of the monks of the degenerate age who have altruistic intentions for the teachings and beings.
