Happiness may occur during the morning and afternoon meditation sessions. The fourth is that upon inhaling, one feels as if the body is also sinking, and a sensation previously experienced suddenly pervades the entire body. Alternatively, upon exhaling, if a white breath emerges from the mouth, one feels as if the body is being gently lifted, and a sensation of happiness pervades the entire body, and the mind is also extremely joyful. Mindfulness firmly grasps the breath. For example, just as a person infatuated with a horse freely indulges the horse, one also becomes free in inhaling and exhaling. The extent of abiding has four characteristics: The characteristic of number is that after the happiness arises, even if one counts from two hundred to one hundred forty, the happiness remains the same as at first. The characteristic of effort is that even if one relaxes, mindfulness does not perceive the breath. The characteristic of happiness is that until the mind is released, happiness pervades the entire body, and even after standing up, one feels slightly happy. The characteristic of joy is that the mind spontaneously bursts into laughter, one is reluctant to separate, and thinking, "This is definitely abiding," one develops faith in the Dharma, and a great deal of faith arises, and even upon standing up, the mind does not easily become distracted, and the thought arises, "How wonderful it would be if others also meditated." Furthermore, whether it is the cause or the place, the perception of inner peace and the perception of calm abiding appear abundantly, there is no perception of elaboration, and the mind does not engage with phenomena that are in accordance with the pervasive entanglement of conceptual thought. The method for making it stable is to estimate based on the condition of the elements. If the elements are comfortable, then reduce the number of meditation sessions, increase the number of counts, make it last longer, and meditate for a few days and then rest. If the elements are weak, then meditate for only one day and then rest. So, how should that limit be measured? By whether the body is tired, or strength arises, or one feels anxious as soon as one starts meditating, or the head feels heavy, or the body trembles, or one cannot fall asleep at night, or the mind feels empty. In short, as soon as a slight sign of discomfort appears, rest immediately. If these signs do not appear, then one should meditate regularly. The method for making it stable is that if the elements are comfortable during the process of thinking, then through meditation, it will become stable later. If it is uncomfortable, it will become stable through resting. The extent of generating and increasing

Having first stabilized, rest overnight, and later meditate one session each in the evening and at dawn. During the day, meditate four, four, five, five sessions. The number of breaths is counted from less than a hundred to up to forty. For a few months, meditate in that way without being too intense. Also do small tasks that do not contradict the Dharma. Even when there is no free time, meditate only in the evening and at dawn. Then, as in the initial learning method, take food that suits the body, have harmonious friends, a comfortable place to live, and abandon many activities, etc. For about ten days, rest well by meditating only one small session each day. Increase the body's energy. Meditate at night. Do only a little of other virtuous deeds. Then, when the energy has increased, generate it depending on which is comfortable, night or day. It is also good during the day, on the first day, meditate three sessions, counting a hundred, a hundred. Then, up to ten days, meditate no more than three sessions each. The number of breaths is increased by a hundred each day. During that time, do not even meet people while eating. Also, if there is little sleep or a minor illness occurs, rest. If there is rest or no discomfort, do as before. What is the ultimate of counting? Up to counting a thousand, the mind does not become distracted, there is no forgetting, it enters naturally and enters with obvious joy, then it has gone beyond the scope of counting. Then, without counting, focus on the way the breath moves, focus on coming out of the nostrils, according to the way focus on coming out of the right nostril and coming out of the left nostril, or exhaling from the right and inhaling into the left, etc., meditate without counting. Then generate insight. The way of acting is inconceivable, the master will not be of shallow wisdom, however, because not pursuing the meaning, not having heard the teachings of the wise, I wrote it considering the benefits. Like a person with blurred vision looking at something, and pointing out to others saying what this is, I ask the wise ones for forgiveness. A little has been written about the method of settling the mind through counting breaths, it is complete. The method of settling the mind through counting breaths.
