It should not be counted. The dull should count and meditate. For a while, even the sharp should learn to purify by counting, because it is easy to grasp the measure of the breath, so the mind quickly abides. Therefore, both should focus on counting. Like this, sit in the lotus position on a comfortable cushion, straighten the body and sit upright for a moment. Then, adjust the breath and feel the breath coming out of the mouth, hold it tightly from the mouth, tighten it extremely, like a blacksmith's bellows or a goldsmith's wooden bellows, let the cold air go into the inside of the navel, stay for a moment, think of "one", and then turn it upwards again. Imagine the white breath coming out of the mouth about four fingers wide, clearly visible, stay for a moment, think of "two". Again, inhale forcefully, let the white breath go into the inside of the navel, count and be sure to feel it, and do not be separated from mindfulness. Grasping the measure of the breath, in general, there are three kinds of breath: upper, middle, and lower, but for other practitioners, it is easy to enter the upper breath, but some people seem to be completely unable to practice, so even the upper breath should be practiced from a short time. Therefore, all three should adopt the same learning method. Keep relaxed at night, the more sleep, the more the breath recovers and expands. During the day, gradually grasp the measure and practice. If the effort is too loose, lazy and drowsy thoughts will arise, completely entangled by sleep, and the mind will be distracted outwards. If the effort is too strong, it will cause harm to the body or mind. So, how does it cause harm to the body? Losing strength, because breathing in and breathing out are damaged, unbalanced winds enter the body, and these winds initially spread throughout its limbs and branches, and these winds are called pervasive winds. If these pervasive winds grow excessively, they will become pathogenic, and these pathogenic things will cause disease to its limbs and branches, which is called harm to the body. So, how does it cause harm to the mind? His mind will be distracted.

Or, it suppresses a great deal of discomfort and confusion, which harms the mind. So, how to grasp the measure? Like this, on the first day, practice four single breaths in one session in the morning. In the afternoon, practice four single breaths in one session as well. The next day, practice two sessions in the morning. Six single breaths each time. In the afternoon, practice six single breaths each in two sessions as well. On the third day, practice eight single breaths each in two sessions, morning and afternoon. On the fourth day, practice ten single breaths each in three sessions, morning and afternoon. Then, on the fifth day, practice ten double breaths each in seven sessions, four in the morning and three in the afternoon. During this time, observe and contemplate the state of your body, and if even a slight illness occurs, pacify it immediately. Do not cultivate endurance for minor illnesses and continue to practice. After that, if there is no discomfort in the body, add one session each day and practice. Do not practice more than ten breaths until you have attained mental stability. If there is a lack of sleep or slight discomfort, reduce one session and practice. During the period of not practicing, balance rest, and do not practice two sessions or more in one sitting. Do not sleep during the day. In all activities, be slow and deliberate. There are four stages of arising. The first is that even if you try to maintain awareness, when inhaling, you feel like you don't want to go down, you feel heavy, and sometimes you feel like awareness hasn't caught it. When exhaling upwards, it also happens and leaves without awareness, it is easy to forget the count, and it becomes difficult for awareness to grasp the breath. The second is that for most sessions, you don't forget the count, and when inhaling, you don't feel heavy, but rather cool, and when exhaling upwards, it happens simultaneously with awareness, like a horse being slightly tamed, awareness slightly grasps it. The third is that you don't forget the count, and at the beginning of inhalation, you can feel the coolness, and until it is reversed, you can feel the coolness in your eyes. At the beginning of exhaling upwards, when exhaling from the mouth, you feel like your lips are also pulling.
