The method of settling the mind through counting breaths. The method of settling the mind through counting breaths. By whose wind being subdued, non-conceptual wisdom is born, and who shows various rays of light, To that one, I prostrate and briefly describe the method of entering. In summary: signs, benefits, what is to be known, retinue, practice, measure-holding, the method of relying on the stages of arising and the extent of abiding, and bringing forth and eliminating until the end of number, are one. Among these, the sign is taken here as the sign of being heavily dominated by discursive thoughts. What is that? It is like this: transformation of the senses, agitation of the senses, instability of the senses, confusion of the senses, scattering of the ends of bodily actions, scattering of the ends of speech actions, difficulty in separating, difficulty in generating joy, desire for elaboration, delight in elaboration, much flattery, much doubt, possessing desire, unstable discipline, uncertain discipline, unstable ends of actions, uncertain ends of actions, many needs, forgetfulness, dislike of solitary places, much distraction, following after the desire and attachment for various worldly things, being intelligent and without laziness, it is said to be able to accomplish. The benefit is that this counting of breaths quickly pacifies discursive thoughts, so one effortlessly obtains calm abiding. After that, insight also arises without difficulty. Because calm abiding and insight are combined, it is also said that non-conceptual wisdom also arises quickly. Even before obtaining special qualities, one is always less sick and also becomes long-lived. It is said like this: If one rises early and counts a thousand, and always does the counting, one is liberated from all diseases and lives as long as the sun and moon exist. What is to be known is that the essence is the wind that moves upward, and the divisions of number are two: inhaling and exhaling. The characteristics are the characteristic of inhaling and the characteristic of exhaling. There are two types of inhaling: inhaling and intermediate inhaling. There are also two types of exhaling: exhaling and intermediate exhaling. The definitive term is called wind, called breath, called the activity of the body, called going and coming.

Oh! The cause is what is thrown by past karma, and there is a tube in the direction of the navel between the mouth or nose, and the support does not rely solely on the body, nor does it rely solely on the mind, nor does it rely solely on both, namely the absorption of non-perception, non-mentation, and the four formless absorptions, as well as the absorption of the fourth dhyana, and creatures such as wrigglers and flickers dwelling in the womb, and creatures such as wrigglers and flickers dwelling in the womb should also have them, therefore some of the two have them. The ground is the coarse ground of movement, and the subtle ground of movement. Among them, the coarse one is the tube from the navel to the mouth or nose. The subtle one is the pores of the hair and so on. There are two kinds of movement, the movement of inhalation is downwards, and the movement of exhalation is upwards. The summary of what should be known is: essence, difference in number, characteristics, terms, cause and, what to rely on and likewise ground, movement and eight, this is the ultimate. The collection is pure morality and so on, see elsewhere. Here, for the moment, a little bit of what needs to be done should be known, first the mind thinks like this, in order to accomplish the essential thing, if there is not one mind abiding, it will be difficult to accomplish, therefore one should generate the mind to accomplish one mind abiding. Then one should know whether one's own nature has more or less of the wind element. Or ask others, and nourish the nature with food and drink that suits the nature. During this time, activities that are in accordance with the Dharma should also be reduced, let alone those that are not in accordance with it? One should ensure that even the slightest faults of body and speech do not arise, and that even the slightest conceptual thoughts of desire, such as longing, do not arise in the mind. One should relax and rest, and if one cannot abide in a virtuous mind, one should rest with a non-attentive mind. After doing this, the power of the continuum increases, and gradually one cannot stay still, and just when one wants to enter virtue, one should cultivate patience. Among them, what is cultivation? Cultivation by those with sharp faculties and cultivation by those with dull faculties. Among them, the sharp ones do not count, but focus on the way the breath moves and cultivate.
