For tangible objects, one should examine the five faculties externally and individually. For emptiness, gaps, and unfilled spaces, one should examine them as the nature of the space element. Relying on hearing and thinking, for the consciousness element, like this, relying on faculties, objects, and mental engagement, the six consciousness elements arise. Thinking that one is focused on various appearances, one then focuses on them sequentially and individually. So, how does one grasp the measure of the channels? Generally, there are three types of channels: superior, intermediate, and inferior. However, it seems easy to enter for other practitioners, but it also seems completely impossible when practicing. Therefore, even with the superior channel, one should start learning from short periods. Therefore, for the time being, all three should be learned in the same way: at night, remain calm, and for as long as one sleeps, for that long, the strengthened channel should be laid back and stretched out. During the day, gradually grasp the measure and practice. Like this, first, during the day, in the morning, practice one session, for the duration it takes to walk half the distance of an arrow's length at a normal pace. In the afternoon, practice one session in the same way. Then, until ten days have passed, add one session each day and practice. If minor illnesses occur, gradually pacify them, and do not practice while forcibly enduring them. In this way, one will gradually understand the measure of the channels. So, there are four stages in the arising of the mind. The first is that the distinctions are unclear, and the order is also confused. The second is that the distinctions are clear when separating, and the order is not confused. The third is that the distinctions are clear and the order is not confused, but one cannot sustain it for long periods, there is no physical comfort or mental joy, and one only has a slight desire to enter. The fourth is that, for both strong and weak efforts, the distinctions are clear, one does not want to move from what one is focused on to something else, and one is able to remain for a long time with physical comfort and mental joy. So, the measure of abiding is like this: the yogi should always rely on and become accustomed to the practice of distinguishing the superior channel. Because of doing this many times, no matter the cause, no matter the state, various channels will appear in the body, and the awareness of the whole or the distinctions of many channels will appear very strongly, and there will even be no awareness of the whole, and one will be completely

The mind will not engage in dharma that is not in accordance with afflictions. The method to rely on this is to know that the mind has settled, and then to reduce the number of sessions compared to previous practice, and to practice for a slightly longer duration. Practice also in the evening and at dawn. Do not strive to exceed the clarity of previous practice, but practice with relaxation. Practice until the body is tired, or the mind is dull, or there is fear during practice, or strength arises, or the head feels heavy, or there is swaying, or trembling, or light sleep at night, or food is not tasty, or there are many errors in speech, etc., until there are slight signs of discomfort. When these occur, rest and massage the body. Nourish the body's energy with food and drink that are in accordance with the dharma. Until the body is fully recovered, practice briefly, one session at a time, during the day and night, whenever you desire to practice. That is just observation. When the energy is strengthened, practice one session each in the evening and at dawn, and about three sessions during the day, and also do things like generating compassion and making aspirations. So, what is the generation of vipassanā? Relying on this object of focus, it becomes very easy to establish the realization of being free from one and many. Like this, those form elements, even though they are very subtle, appear to have parts. If you search for it, that which has no parts cannot become an object of focus. The element of consciousness, and that which is related to the mind, in an instant without parts, there is no object of focus. The space element is also related to parts, so how can there be one? As it is said, in the Meeting of the Holy Father and Son Sutra, it is also said: Great King, if you search for each and every dharma, it is not found. Therefore, if one is not established, many will not be established, because it depends on one. For this, it is established through very clear observation and through inference. Therefore, because it is free from one and many, there is no inherent existence in ultimate truth, like an image, one should follow the instructions that are said in this way. The way of action is inconceivable, and there is no one more foolish than me, but because I do not seek the true meaning, and have not heard the teachings of the wise, I have written these down after considering the benefits. Like someone with blurred vision looking at things.
