What is the realm of consciousness? The eye faculty is the master, and form is the object. To distinguish various forms, that is, to distinguish blue, or yellow, red, black, or to distinguish long, short, thick, thin. Whatever it may be, to distinguish color and shape, this is called the realm of eye consciousness. Similarly, whatever the case may be, the ear faculty is the master, and so on until the mind faculty is also the master. Dharma is the object, to distinguish sound, or to distinguish smell, or to distinguish taste, or to distinguish dharma, this is the realm of ear consciousness. From the realm of ear consciousness to the realm of mind consciousness, thus the six faculties are the masters, the six objects are the objects, and to distinguish the objects, this is called the realm of consciousness. Thus it is said. Regarding this, the assembly refers to the complete purity of discipline, etc., which should be observed elsewhere. Here, let us contemplate a little, thinking like this: if this pride, which becomes an obstacle to the noble path, is not abandoned, one will constantly be born in the lower realms and in unfavorable circumstances. Even if one in a hundred is born as a human, one will still cling to beings of low birth, blindness, ugliness, and weakness. How can one attain unsurpassed enlightenment? Thus it is said. In the Sutra Requested by the Noble Delight Protector, it is said: Due to ignorance, being controlled by pride, one falls into the lower realms, with beings in unfavorable circumstances and the poor, born into low castes and blindness, clinging to the ugly and the weak. Thus it is said. Therefore, I must abandon this arrogance at all times, and I should think like this. What is meditation? First, after all tasks are completely finished, sit in the lotus position on a comfortable cushion, straighten the body, and sit quietly for a moment. Then, grasp the characteristics of the five external realms and believe that they belong to the five internal realms. Relying on hearing and thinking, believe that this is the realm of consciousness. Like this, the realm of the eye is composed of the four great elements, namely hardness, moisture, warmth, lightness, and movement. Thus, strive to understand and observe what appears fundamentally. Like this.
