Pustules and filth, and things similar to these, should be recognized as the impure things that depend on the external. This is also the antidote to the four types of attachment, namely, from attachment to color, shape, touch, and intimacy, the mind is purified. Among these, when one contemplates from complete offering to complete consumption, then one purifies the mind from attachment to color. When one contemplates complete redness, then one purifies the mind from attachment to shape. When one contemplates a pile of bones and a skeleton, then one purifies the mind from attachment to touch. When one contemplates complete scattering, then one purifies the mind from attachment to intimacy. Therefore, the Bhagavan also spoke of the four charnel grounds as impure things that depend on the external. This should be understood for the time being. As for the assembly, one should look elsewhere, such as complete purity of discipline, and so on. Here, one should contemplate a little, thinking: If there is no place for the mind to abide for someone who takes practice as the essence, it is difficult to practice. Therefore, I should first cultivate a place for the mind to abide. Furthermore, if one is attached to the internal body and the external woman, it will generate various harms and lead to the three lower realms. Then, where is the abiding of the mind, the birth in a good realm, and the hope for liberation? Without a good realm, how can one practice? As it is said in the "Moon Lamp Sutra": This decaying body, and life is also impermanent and involuntary. For things that are like dreams and illusions, these children, because of their attachment, will suffer and go to hell. It is also said: If someone with a mind of attachment serves a decaying woman, beings will go to decay, therefore they will go to a bad realm. Therefore, one should abandon the mind of attachment to the body and women. So, what is meditation? First, one should completely finish all tasks, sit in the lotus position on a comfortable cushion, straighten the body, and sit for a short while. Then, temporarily focus the mind on the impure things that depend on the internal, as follows

Then, regarding this body, contemplate each part—hair, body hair, brain, marrow, and the intervals between urine and feces—as decaying, unscented, foul-smelling, and unpleasant. To focus the mind on contemplating the unpleasantness based on external objects is to focus on complete abandonment. Therefore, whether it is a woman, a man, a friend, an ordinary person, a suitable person, a mediocre person, a good person, a child, a middle-aged person, or an old person, having seen the characteristics of a corpse oneself, or having heard about it from others, or having fully examined it, take the characteristics of a corpse that has been dead for one day, from which blood is oozing and which has not yet decayed, and contemplate that this is complete abandonment. One should strive diligently and contemplate as clearly as possible. Furthermore, one should strive diligently and contemplate as clearly as possible on whatever one prefers among piles of bones, skeletons, and skeletons of bones. Regarding controlling the elements (kham), in general, there are three types of elements: superior, intermediate, and inferior. However, there are also those who excel in other virtuous practices but are unable to meditate. Even with superior elements, one should begin meditating from short sessions. Therefore, all three should temporarily adopt the same method of learning. At night, remain in equanimity, and the more one sleeps, the more the elements are strengthened, and the more one sleeps and expands. During the day, gradually control and meditate. For example, on the first day, in the morning, meditate for one session, walking at a normal pace for about half the distance of an arrow shot. In the afternoon, meditate in the same way for one session. Then, for ten days, add one session each day and meditate. If a minor illness occurs, it should be immediately pacified; do not endure it and meditate. If there is no discomfort, meditate as mentioned above. In this way, one will gradually come to know the extent of the elements. Regarding this, there are four stages of the arising of mind: first, the object is not clear regardless of the intensity of effort; second, if one meditates intensely, some aspects become clear, but they cannot be sustained for long; third, if one meditates intensely, whatever one focuses on becomes clear, but if one weakens, some aspects become unclear, and they do not appear for long; fourth, regardless of the intensity of effort, whatever one focuses on, such as the brain, appears very clearly, and that is
