Commentary on the Heart Sutra, Explained as Mantra Vairochana Commentary on the Heart Sutra, Explained as Mantra Vairochana Herein lies the Commentary on the Heart Sutra, Explained as Mantra. The Bhagavan Vairochana, and so forth. With the Two Mothers, and, To the Sangha, the supreme assembly, Having prostrated, I also take refuge. From the Sutra itself, endowed with the Three Words, With loving-kindness directed towards sentient beings, and, Since it is inseparable from compassion for all, This explanation of the Sutra as Mantra, Should be taught to the excellent ones. It should not be taught to the logicians. "Thus have I heard at one time," this is not at another time, but indicates the nearness of the time. That is not self-awareness, etc., but the time of hearing from another. Or else, the meaning of the compiler himself having heard greatly. Time is the time of the gathering of the main and attendant figures. "At one time" is not like many times, or repeatedly asking, but at one time when the main and attendant figures were assembled. "Bhagavan" indicates the characteristics of the teacher. That which is conquered in common is the conquering of the four maras, possessing the six perfections, and transcending wrong knowledge. That which is conquered in particular is the conquering of the five aggregates, etc., the phenomena of existence, in the state of deities. Possessing the meaning of that itself, it transcends the object of grasping. That which is conquered in particular and unsurpassed is the conquering of the dharmas of samsara and nirvana in the state of essence, without effort. Possessing the great wisdom of self-awareness, since nothing is established as its own essence, it transcends the words or limits that appear as samsara and nirvana. "Rajagriha, Vulture Peak Mountain" indicates the distinction of the place. That is, the external place is the dwelling place of King Embodied Heart, to the east of Magadha, like a pile of jewels. The mountain like a round stupa is the dwelling place of the Buddhas, a special place among all mountains. The inner place is the place of Akanishta, not falling under form or sign or grasping. The secret place is awareness, the mind of enlightenment, which has become the place of all samsara and nirvana. The great Sangha of monks and the great Sangha of Bodhisattvas, dwelling together, indicates the retinue. The external retinue is the individuals of desire and faith, virtuous.

Because of abiding in the precepts, it is a Bhikshu. By practicing the meaning of observation and guarding, the strong-minded one who can accomplish the benefit of others in the great Sangha is the Sangha of Bodhisattvas. Abiding together with those retinues and others. The inner retinue is the Sambhogakaya retinue such as the Five Buddha Families. The secret retinue is the indivisible essence of self-knowing wisdom. At that time, the Dharma should be taught. The Dharma also includes external Dharma, such as the Dharma to be learned, which is the ten virtues and so on. The inner Dharma is the Dharma of the Mahayana. The secret Dharma is awareness and wisdom. At that time, the Bhagavan entered into the Samadhi of the Dharma category called Profound Appearance, which means at the time of possessing the five perfections. At the time when all the retinues are ripened, the Bhagavan is profound in emptiness, that is, the profound meaning of the Dharma that is not a thing, and the Dharma category is the external, internal, and secret Dharma, and such Samadhi abides without an object. That is also the external Samadhi abiding in the Dharma of things. The inner is without things. The secret is the meaning of non-discrimination in them. Also, at that time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara, the Lord, contemplates the practice of the profound Prajnaparamita, and also contemplates those five aggregates as being empty by nature, which means that when the teacher abides in the state of Dharma-nature tranquility, the chief of the retinue will also naturally abide. That Bodhisattva abides in the external place of learning. The inner is up to the tenth Bhumi. The secret is the meaning of the heart essence. Because of possessing them, it is great. Or the Bodhisattva is the one who accomplishes self-benefit, and the strong-minded one, the great-minded one, is the one who accomplishes the benefit of others. The common Arya is the one who is far away from afflictions or Samsara. The special one is the retinue of the Sambhogakaya. The unsurpassed one is the Dharmakaya, which is the meaning of the heart essence of awareness. For the sake of self-benefit, he observes, that is, he himself realizes the meaning, and for the sake of the benefit of others, he observes, that is, he can teach according to the inclinations of the beings to be tamed. Therefore, he is the master of both self and others, or both Samsara and Nirvana, that is, there is meaning to be done.
