"The Sutra of Nourishing Life" Essence of Nagarjuna "The Sutra of Nourishing Life" Essence of Nagarjuna Herein lies "The Sutra of Nourishing Life." In Sanskrit: ཛཱི་བ་སཱུ་ཏྲ། (jīva sūtra). In Tibetan: "The Sutra of Nourishing Life." One fascicle. Homage to the All-Knowing One! Homage to the supreme physician, who dispels the suffering of afflictions! Except for those with the conduct of noble ascetics, wise individuals, through the three—wind, bile, and phlegm—and appropriate conduct, mindful behavior, and proper deportment, having obtained this human body and making it meaningful, only the significance of nourishment will be explained. The three—desire, anger, and ignorance—give rise to the three—wind, bile, and phlegm. Body, place, time, and everything else, along with ease, are controlled freely. As stated by the great ascetic, therefore, briefly explaining their differences, here are described the methods, signs, foods, places, diagnoses, intentions, and a few other things. A rough and emaciated body, agitated mind, talkativeness, and coldness characterize a person of the wind type. Reddish-yellow color, sharp intellect, irritability, high body temperature, and odor characterize a person of the bile type. White and oily complexion, steady speech, heaviness, low body temperature, and sleepiness characterize a person of the phlegm type. The mixture of two or three should also be understood from this. The elderly, young, and children should be observed and understood accordingly. A cold sensation is the place of wind, heat is the place of bile. Moisture and oiliness are the place of phlegm, and the mixture should be inferred from this. Internally: evening is the time of phlegm, dawn and afternoon are the times of wind. Noon and midnight are the times of bile, it should be understood. In spring, phlegm increases; in early summer, wind increases, etc.; in autumn, bile increases. In late summer, wind increases, bile, etc.; in early and late winter, phlegm increases, etc. Autumn pacifies wind, early winter pacifies bile, late summer pacifies phlegm. Having described the body, place, and time, the differences of the six tastes are briefly explained. Sweetness is generally cooling, increases phlegm, and eliminates wind and bile. Ghee, molasses, heartwood, sickle, wheat, and barley are heating. Papaya, honey, dry meat, barley, and old molasses eliminate phlegm; barberry and amla do not increase phlegm, they are balanced. Pungency is heating, increases bile, and eliminates wind and phlegm. Animal bile eliminates bile, Terminalia chebula also increases wind. Sourness is generally heating, increases bile, and eliminates phlegm and wind. Amla and Nepalese apples eliminate bile. Sweet apples are cooling, thick, and diluted with water do not increase bile. Bitterness is cooling, increases wind, and eliminates phlegm.

To eliminate bile disorders, Shu dag and Shi Hua Cai are warm and suitable, and their combination can also eliminate wind disorders. Astringent tastes are all cooling, but if you want to generate wind and eliminate phlegm and bile disorders, Haritaki is harmless to the three disorders and can balance them. Moderate amounts of alcohol can eliminate phlegm and wind disorders, but excessive amounts can cause bile disorders. Salt is warm, eliminates wind disorders, but can cause phlegm and bile disorders, Rock salt and tongue salt are less harmful than bile disorders. Sweet, astringent, and salty tastes gradually increase in weight from bottom to top, Sour, spicy, and bitter tastes are the opposite, decreasing from bottom to top. Bitter, astringent, and salty tastes gradually become rougher from bottom to top, Sweet, sour, and spicy tastes are the opposite, becoming softer from bottom to top. Wind, bile, and phlegm disorders are similar, all arising from themselves, If the body, region, season, diet, and habits are the same, diseases will arise, How to harmonize diet so that wind, bile, and phlegm disorders do not occur is beneficial. Therefore, the methods of what is suitable and unsuitable are truthfully explained here. Wind disorders are suitable for sweet, oily, heavy, and warm, and unsuitable for rough, light, and cool. Bile disorders are suitable for bitter, sweet, and cool, and unsuitable for hot, sour, and warm. Phlegm disorders are unsuitable for oily, heavy, and cool, and suitable for rough and hot foods. Therefore, in order to make oneself suitable for the season, residence, and food, The two months of spring are the season for generating phlegm disorders, so it is easy to get sick, Phlegm should be cleared, laxatives and emetics should be taken, and hot spring water should be drunk. Eat rough, astringent, and light foods such as barley, roasted meat, and honey. Drink honey wine, grape wine, ginger water, honey water, and brown sugar wine. Avoid oily, heavy, sugary, sour, and hot foods such as butter and fat. Avoid sweet and sour foods, keep it light, and avoid sleeping during the day. Wash the body with warm water, massage, and do appropriate labor and exercise. Live in a warm and shady place that is neither too hot nor too cold. The first two months of summer are the time to reduce, and excessive fatigue and strenuous exercise should be avoided. Do not be lazy, eat rice, milk, butter, meat, etc. Eat a small amount of brown sugar and fat, and drink a small amount of alcohol. Drinking boiled and cooled milk with sugar and yogurt is beneficial. Avoid salty, sour, and spicy foods such as turnips. Wash the body with lukewarm water, listen to music, and wear decorations. It is beneficial to be exposed to rain and take a nap during the day. Live in a cool place without strong hail and that is neither cold nor hot. In the last two months of summer, bile disorders will worsen and wind disorders will occur,
