A Treatise on the Establishment of Mere Cognition. Ratnakara Shanti. A Treatise on the Establishment of Mere Cognition. Ratnakara Shanti. In Sanskrit: Bijñāpatimātratāsiddhi nāma. In Tibetan: A Treatise on the Establishment of Mere Cognition. Homage to youthful Manjushri! Yogācārins assert that these three realms are merely cognition, hence they are called Yogācārins. This treatise explains how to establish the truth from distorted cognition. Whatever is cognized by something is not different from it, like the nature of the cognizer itself. White, blue, fragrance, sweetness, roughness, etc., are all cognized by that consciousness, hence it is the reason of self-nature. This is not without a basis, because the dharma to be proven, such as white and blue, is established in one dharma-nature. Nor is self-nature unestablished, because in that dharma-nature, they are what should be cognized. Thus, both reasons are established. By saying "these," it is because of such cognition that white and so on have been established as dharma-nature. It is also not contradictory, because in the concordant side, it also involves the self-nature of cognizing self-nature. If it is said that there is no example of establishment, wouldn't it become knowing self-nature? But it does not exist in itself, so it is contradictory. Just as a sword's edge, no matter how sharp, cannot cut itself. If it is said that like a sprout obtaining self-nature, etc., it is not contradictory to act on itself? There is also contradiction in what is related. Why? Because the sword's edge that enters what is to be cut is the cutter, but it cannot enter itself, because one cannot have both external and internal natures at the same time. Because the cognizer pervades the nature of consciousness, there is no contradiction. Thus, the nature of clarity is clarity, meaning appearing separately. Its connection is the ability to clarify, so it is what should be cognized.

It is said that the agent itself is the doer. Moreover, it is related to its own nature through it. That which has the nature of clarity is clarity, because it is contradictory for it not to be the nature of that entity. Thus, that which has the nature of clarity is the knower, because it establishes what is to be known. That itself is only the knower, like cutting with a sword and piercing with an arrow. Therefore, the determination of the knower and the known is only its own nature, because there is no difference. Therefore, there is no contradiction in the self being the knower. Therefore, self-illuminating is the characteristic of consciousness being clear. If it is said that consciousness is also illuminated by another consciousness, then if consciousness is also by another consciousness, it would lead to an infinite regress. However, in order to answer the difficulty of infinite regress, if someone wants the last one to be self-sufficient, then the first one should be accepted, not transmitted through others. Furthermore, if the consciousness that is illuminated by the power of another is the knower, then at that time the object would also become the known. If not, then consciousness is also not. Therefore, self-illuminating is the characteristic of consciousness. Thus, since the self-nature of consciousness is only the nature of clarity, and since it is currently illuminating, this consciousness is called the knower. Thus, in the example of the self-nature of consciousness, since the reason of the knower is established, the reason is not contradictory, and the example is not without establishment. The reason is also not uncertain, because the pervasion is established by including everything in this example. Thus, the illuminator is the knower, therefore, it is seen in the example that it contradicts the nature of non-clarity, because by eliminating all natures of non-clarity, it is determined only as the nature of clarity, thus establishing the pervasion of including everything. Thus, since the reason for the knower, which has abandoned the three faults, establishes that there is no difference between that and that, there is no fault. However, this is uncertain.
