Thinking of joining in, therefore distinguishing by applying names. Distinguishing has different kinds. After completely distinguishing, one undoubtedly wants to say "this is exactly it." Because it relies on clear certainty. If it is so for other things, then the certainty of its meaning will not change. The fruit of language is complete distinction, and without it, there is no fruit. A tree distinguishes between tree and non-tree. Relying on tree, non-tree is not. If one does not understand the absence of non-tree, then the tree is not mutually dependent. Through the difference in the function of sound, through this difference it is fully proclaimed. If not through the difference in things, then why refute fabricated assertions? Non-tree is the essence of fire, in order to exclude tree and so on. Not through the actual difference of tree, therefore they are not mutually dependent. The meaning of sound is also other, and the meaning of things is also considered other. Tree is sound and so on, there is no connection between sound and meaning. Signs, numbers, and complete goodness, etc., are all of the nature of being mixed together. What is clearly seen by the eyes, sound indicates people and so on. Thus, the opposite of difference is a characteristic, understood as one nature. Because it is not different, similarly one does not express kind and difference, etc. This is called excluding others, in order to understand cows and so on. One should seek other sounds, whatever is said in this way is excluded. The two, opposite and contrary, if they are different, then there will be change here, if they are not different, then other sounds, for what reason is it fully understood? For excluding others and so on, whatever faults are pointed out, those do not hit the mark, like hitting the kidneys with a whip. This is merely thinking of oneself, the meaning of sound should also remain. For worldly names, follow one's own thoughts. How that meaning is understood, it is determined in that way. Because names are for pursuing, so it is in that way and not otherwise. For the unique meaning of the all-knowing, like an elephant closing its eyes, abiding completely in names, showing meaning like the world. Gatama, Karkotaka, Kapata, etc., whatever things are mutually opposite, those, after completely imagining them as one thing through the mind, are given the names tree and arbor. Even though it is one, it is completely imagined as many, arising, ceasing, abiding.
