The earth (goddess) said: "Not knowing the virtues of the great god Lokeśvara, you are truly a foolish person, why is that? Look here, the city of the Asuras flies in the sky, men, women, old and young alike, having taken up great bows, with blazing arrows, they burn them like grass in an instant. The Kalyāṇamitra said: 'I do not like such a differentiated sentient being who strives to kill those creatures who by their very nature are subject to death.' Who would strive to destroy the dewdrop on the tip of the grass, which is by nature perishable? For the moment, leave everything else aside, do you all know that harming others is a virtue?" Then, all the Brahmins said at once: "Killing Asuras is a virtue, we know it very well." The Kalyāṇamitra sighed and said: "That which the holy ones are amazed by, the unholy ones are proud of, alas, the world is truly wonderful!" This is indeed a good description of the world. In short, by acting upon the examination of virtues and faults, by recognizing what should and should not be done, one obtains the virtues of the victorious ones. For the vast followers, virtue is certain joy, the fruit of offerings is vast desire. Understanding faults as virtues, and worshipping those associated with faults as holy, one will not obtain vast fruits, but only increase wrong views. When some old Brahmins heard these words, they looked at that Kalyāṇamitra with eyes blazing with anger, and with contempt, pointing with their left hands, they said: "Foolish Gandharas, do not speak such words! If even the great gods, such as the one who delights in killing Asuras, should not be worshipped, then who should be worshipped?" The Kalyāṇamitra said: "Those who are endowed with true virtues should be worshipped. Great Brahmins, look! If those powerful abusers, if they should be worshipped, then bears, leopards, and tigers, too, should always be worshipped by people. The holy ones who are skilled in virtues and faults, have no partiality towards anyone. Vicious animals such as bears, do not worship those without virtue. Non-harming and the like are the virtues of non-harming, harming and the like are...

It should be known as a fault. Because of not knowing merits and faults, faults are seen as merits. What extremely fierce deeds are seen by worldly children? Because they are not as wise as those in the place of offering, they know that they are the ones to be offered to. However, the Gandharva certainly possesses the discernment of faults and merits. Therefore, (one should) have faith in the Buddha Bhagavan, not in the great deity, etc. The Brahmin said: Hey, Gandharva, tell me for a moment, who is this so-called Buddha? The householder said: Well-born in the Shakya clan, Omniscient, victorious over all faults, Desiring to benefit all sentient beings, The great sage is the Buddha. The Brahmin said: If you know that the Buddha is a great sage, then do you say that harming others is not worthy of offering? It is widely rumored in the world that great sages such as transference, fire burning, growth, abiding, common sense, three-pointed wooden pegs, and the son of common sense all cast curses. If that Buddha becomes a great sage, then surely he will also cast curses. The householder covered his ears and said: Do not speak evil words! The Buddha Bhagavan does not cast curses. The Brahmin said: Why do you say here, may sins be pacified? If the Buddha casts curses, then he will also become a true harmer. But if he does not cast curses on anyone, then what power does this Buddha have? After that, those Brahmins especially rebuked the Gandharva with contradictory words and began to make loud noises. That householder spoke truthfully: The Buddha Bhagavan is not without great power, but because he is free from the cause of curses, he does not cast curses on anyone. Great Brahmin, look! Whoever is always attached to the greedy, If separated from them, they become angry, Extremely ignorant of birds and non-birds, Afterwards, they will send out curses. The Thus-Gone One is free from desire, Free from ignorance and victorious over anger, If he benefits all sentient beings, How will he cast curses? After that, those Brahmins followed the causes of remembrance and
