The Garland of Examples. The Garland of Examples. In Indian language: Dṛṣṭānta-mālya (दृष्टान्तमाल्य, Drishta-anta-malya, The Garland of Examples). In Tibetan: དཔེའི་ཕྲེད་བ། (péi tréwa, The Garland of Examples). Homage to youthful Manjushri! First, homage to the supreme teacher among speakers, and to the Dharma that destroys the desires of the three realms, and to the Sangha adorned with the eight noble persons, which is the vessel of the nectar of the teachings of the all-knowing one, extremely subdued. Thought Perfect ribs shining and so on, this and that. The best of the Sarvāstivādins, having offered with faith, I shall explain this garland of examples. With the excellent speech of supreme wisdom, without concealment, it is shown here. Understanding the nature of virtues and faults, one will understand who should be offered to and who should not be offered to, therefore one should strive to understand the nature of virtues and faults. It is heard that in the country of Gandhara, some merchants were robbed. There, they repeatedly prostrated to the stupas and respectfully served the virtuous practitioners. When the Brahmins learned that this person was a layperson, they laughed at him. Later, one afternoon during the Soga festival, a Brahmin was sitting on the roadside. There were also some Brahmins who had bathed and smeared themselves with fragrances, enjoying food, satisfying their senses, holding whisks in their hands towards the door of the house, holding white things for offering. Most of them were immersed in conversation, gathered together with joy. When they saw that layperson, they laughed loudly. Another Brahmin also said: Layperson of the Buddha, come here, there is a seat, please sit. He sat there. A Brahmin asked: Why do the people of Gandhara abandon gods such as the Great Lord and Vishnu and offer to the Buddha? That layperson replied: We only know one aspect of the virtues of the Buddha, the Bhagavan, but we do not know the virtues of the gods such as the Great Lord. Therefore, we offer to the Buddha, the Bhagavan. After hearing these words, some Brahmins
