That which causes deterioration should not be drunk, What should not be done is done as if it should be, Untruths are spoken as if they were true, And the timid act as if they were not timid. That which intoxicates, ruins families, and becomes a cause of suffering, Is like a manifest demoness of sin, a wicked devil. It is no different from the source of quarrels, Who would drink that unbearable darkness of the heart? Having drunk it, the mind becomes utterly confused, And even loving parents may be killed, Innocent monks, Brahmins, and hermits are killed, Theft, adultery, and slander are committed. Lies, slander, harsh words, and idle talk are spoken, The darkness of greed, hatred, and wrong views is grasped. That root of non-virtue should not be drunk. If one drinks, then discipline, meditation, Wisdom, views, livelihood, rituals, Mindfulness, awareness, faith, and diligence decline, Virtuous Dharma is wasted, that should not be drunk. Having drunk it, sinful deeds, after the body is destroyed, One falls into the hell of sentient beings that is extremely difficult to endure, Hungry ghosts and animals also become mad, That root of suffering should not be drunk. In the Sutra of the Joyful One, Thirty-five faults of intoxication are taught. Therefore, child, if you wish to benefit me, That root of all faults should not be drunk. For all who love to drink, They will always act with carelessness, It will become medicine for the wise, And white Dharma will diminish. The root of all faults lies in carelessness, In this life and the next, one is utterly deluded. Therefore, great person that you are, You should always abandon the love of alcohol. Those who speak beneficial words are rare, Those who listen Are even rarer, Even rarer than those who do not listen, Are those who act according to beneficial words. Offering to those who speak beneficial words, Is extremely accomplishing the teachings. Child, if you wish to make offerings to me, You should act according to the teachings. Abandon the love of alcohol. This precious letter of mine, From speaking to the child, whatever merit arises, May all beings attain omniscience. The Letter to a Son, written by the great scholar Pandita Sadajana, is complete. Translated, revised, and finalized by the Kashmiri abbot Mahajana and the Tibetan translator Marpa Chökyi Wangchuk.
