A Letter to a Son. A Letter to a Son. In Sanskrit: Sutaṃ Lekha. In Tibetan: A Letter to a Son. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! This vast ocean transformed into land, a realm of hundreds of millions of Arhats. Filled with people of good conduct, an unparalleled glorious gateway, here lies the source of knowledge. Sages are jewels, descendants of royal lineage, of the Brahmin caste. With robust form, complete wisdom, may he become a Mahājāna (Great Knower). Most beloved parents, friends, relatives, and kin. Like dust from spit, abandoning them without regard. Wandering alone in the darkness of the barbarian frontier. May that intelligent son be illuminated by the lamp of wisdom! I, the most loving guide. Having taken from the island of the ocean of good speech. This precious letter I send to my son. Listen with utmost respect, joy, and faith. Having abandoned the auspicious central land, magnificent houses, possessions, and. With unwavering mind, constantly cherishing. Parents, friends, and roots, it is truly contemptible that you, son, wander in the borderlands. If, for the sake of the sacred Dharma, one abandons parents. It is proper to wander to other lands like a precious jewel. Having abandoned parents for the sake of desire. How is it fitting to wander for the sake of contemptible things? You, son, are attached to the most beautiful forms and melodious sounds. Fragrant scents, supreme tastes, and pleasurable tactile sensations. These beings sink into the swamp of desire. Just like an elephant trapped in a swamp. From desire arise fear and suffering. Sorrow and various harms also arise. Killing, imprisonment, and dismemberment. One is also thrown into fire, water, and cliffs. By craving desire, sentient beings in hell. Suffer in the realms of hungry ghosts and animals. Even if reborn as a human, one experiences suffering, unpleasant sounds. Smells foul odors, and is afflicted by hunger and thirst. The lazy one feels happy. Similarly, the world with desire feels happy. Therefore, being without desire is happiness. Just like mirrors, rocks. Incense burners, ladles, and the sky. Images, sounds, incense, and. The taste of food and the winds. Are never satisfied. Similarly, the eyes and ears. Nose, tongue, and body. Beautiful forms, melodious sounds, fragrant scents. Supreme tastes, and pleasurable tactile sensations. Are never satisfied. Therefore, abandon all desires. Rely on the Dharma of the noble ones.

Finished. Morality, Samadhi, and Wisdom are supreme, Satisfied with the bliss of liberation. One should abandon attachment to desires. Attachment to wealth causes suffering in this life and the next, Both suffer, therefore, one's own Seeing the ripening of karma, one suffers greatly. Suffering again from falling into lower realms, From the suffering of accumulating, guarding, and losing, One should know that wealth is the source of endless suffering. Those who are distracted by attachment to wealth, Have no time to be liberated from the suffering of samsara. For the sake of wealth, Prince Good Intentions Had his eyes pierced by sharp thorns. A daughter, a lover, ears, sesame seeds, Died, transmigrated, and wandered in the ocean. Here, some wealth seekers plant bright trees, Some seem to cut off their own limbs. Others are imprisoned in extremely deep prisons, Some are bound by stinginess, unwilling to give to anyone. Five hundred merchants taking treasures, Were captured by Rakshasa women on the island of Sinhala. The great magical horse king, Was also unable to save them. Here, gold, silver, and lapis lazuli, Pearls, coral, agate, etc., And Karshapana, etc., are piled up like mountains, But wealth seekers are never satisfied. Even if one possesses wealth Equal to excavating the snowy mountains, A wealth seeker will never be satisfied. Therefore, child, you should abandon attachment to wealth. Here, those with much wealth suffer, Those with few desires are not like that. How many heads do the Naga kings have, That many sufferings arise from them. Even if one abandons life to accumulate wealth, One will become very unfortunate, That wealth is like a dream, like clouds. Therefore, one should have few desires and be content. Even if one accumulates much wealth and hides it, By using a little bit, The wealth of a miser is like, It only creates suffering. Child, if you want to seek wealth, You should rely on the seven noble riches. It will not be plundered by kings or thieves, It will relieve the poverty of samsara. For those who always have morality, Adorn them with generosity and respect. Thus hide wealth as treasure, It will follow you, And cannot be plundered. Here, begging for wealth is inferior, Not giving is even more inferior.
