The Teaching on the Path of the Ten Virtuous Actions Translated by Chöden Rabjor Yang The Teaching on the Path of the Ten Virtuous Actions Translated by Chöden Rabjor Yang In Sanskrit: Daśakuśalakarmapathanirdeśa. In Tibetan: The Teaching on the Path of the Ten Virtuous Actions. Homage to the Three Jewels! These ten virtuous actions are the cause of all higher realms and definite goodness. Therefore, the disciples of the Buddha should train in them. So, what are the ten virtuous actions? The actions of the body are of three types: killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. The actions of speech are of four types: not lying, not slandering, not using harsh words, and not engaging in idle chatter. The actions of the mind are of three types: abandoning covetousness, abandoning harmful intent, and abandoning wrong views. Therefore, abandoning the ten non-virtues is the ten virtues. The ten things to be abandoned should be spoken of, as it is said in the Noble Bodhisattva Pitaka: Sentient beings who kill, who steal the wealth of others, and who engage in sexual misconduct, sentient beings go utterly to hell. Those who cause discord and use harsh words, who speak falsely and are not restrained, children who speak frivolously, each is bound by deceiving fools. Covetousness of others' actions, and harmful intent that is abundant, and whoever enters into wrong views, will go to the lower realms. The three sins of the body, the four sins of speech, and the three sins of the mind, those who commit sins do so greatly. Having done sinful deeds, therefore one will go to the lower realms. By all means, not letting one go to the lower realms, for the sake of protecting, one should strive diligently. Thus spoke the Bhagavan. So, how do these offenses become complete? Killing, the basis is a sentient being, recognizing it as such, intending to kill, performing the action, and at the time of performing the action or at another time, death occurs, these five branches are complete. Regret for not dying is less than the sin of dying. Madness, mental confusion, and being tormented by feelings, there is no fault, apply this to all. Stealing,

If it is completely transformed, if an object that should be taken is completely possessed by another, it belongs to another, and recognizing that it belongs to another, and thinking of stealing it, and moving it from its original place. There are seven types of sexual misconduct: those done by oneself, those done by one's own wife, those done by someone who should not be a wife as a wife, those done by someone who is not a wife, those done by a man, those done by an animal, and those done by boys and girls. Among them, those done by oneself, remembering places where one should not engage in sexual activity, causing semen to be ejaculated from the root gate by oneself or another. Those done by one's own wife, at inappropriate times, during the day, on fasting days, when sick, pregnant, afflicted by sorrow, menstruating, when wounds have not healed, etc., and in inappropriate places, such as with parents, gurus, the Three Jewels, stupas, etc., and with non-limbs, such as the mouth, the path of excrement, the navel, etc., in short, all places other than a woman's root gate. Engaging in sexual activity with one's own wife in such inappropriate times, places, and with non-limbs is sexual misconduct arising from one's own wife. Those done by someone who should not be a wife as a wife, such as a laywoman practicing pure conduct, a bhikkhuni, a śikṣamāṇā, a śrāmaṇerikā, a woman observing vows, taking them as wives, whether they are happy or unhappy, creating the condition for them to renounce their vows, this is what arises from someone who should not be a wife as a wife. Those born from a non-wife, that is, any woman who is occupied by another household, who is related to oneself within seven generations, who has a Dharma name, who has precepts, who is protected by parents, brothers, sisters, family, and lineage, who is protected by the husband's side such as parents-in-law and sons-in-law, who is protected by unequal caste and qualities, prostitutes who are also occupied by other men who have paid in advance, and those who are possessed by oneself like the wives of other men, engaging in sexual activity with them, if it is known by others, the sin is very great, even if it is not known, it is still sexual misconduct.
