The Talk on the Eight Unfree States. Ashvaghosha. The Talk on the Eight Unfree States. Ashvaghosha. In Indian language: Aṣṭa Akṣaṇa Kathā. In Tibetan language: The Talk on the Eight Unfree States. Homage to youthful Manjushri. Here, one should respectfully listen to the Dharma spoken by the Bhagavan, for later it will not be easy to find. Why is that? Because in this life, those who are liberated from the eight unfree states are extremely rare. What are these eight unfree states? They are: the hells, animals, hungry ghosts, those born in border regions, long-lived gods, those with incomplete faculties, wrong views, and the non-appearance of the Tathagata. Thus, if one possesses these eight unfree states, one will not obtain a human body and will not possess the Dharma of liberation. How are they? They should be spoken of. Hells, animals, and hungry ghosts mostly dwell on the path of flesh-eating. Here, some may transform into humans or gods, but most will not. Accumulating a collection of virtuous roots is rare, like a turtle's neck fitting into the yoke hole of a few. Becoming an island of all precious things, washing away all inauspicious stains, being the ultimate of the sacred Dharma, necessarily arising in countless eons, becoming skilled in various things, obtaining the state of Buddhahood, and being perfected by it, is extremely difficult to obtain. Having made virtue the essence in front of oneself, one should prioritize the antidote of virtuous Dharma, as non-virtuous Dharma is generated by hatred. Like mountain water that moves, like wind that does not stay, like Kashi flowers that scatter, moving and unstable, like autumn clouds, like lightning, like a lamp at dawn, like a water drop on a lotus petal, like a city of gandharvas, like a mind that has reached maturity, one should not trust people. Therefore, one should practice like this: like entering into fire, thinking oneself well, one should quickly and certainly take refuge. Why is that? Because in all circumstances, it is rare not to find a virtuous friend. When experiencing the reviving hell, the black line hell, the crushing hell, the crying hell, the great crying hell, the hot hell, the extremely hot

Moreover, in these great suffering places of the Avīci hell, beings are born and confused, vomiting and excreting, beaten, burned, cut, extracted and chopped, eaten, killed, bound, crying and wailing, groaning, immersed in various sufferings and numerous pains, sinking in endless rivers, forests of sword leaves, thickets of sharp thorns, roads filled with razors, walking without order, eating burning iron balls, drinking boiling blood, sitting on burning ground, chains of fire burning the body like blazing firewood. Completely vomiting and fleeing, fainting, groaning, utterly destroyed, wailing in affliction, grieving, smoke, and various forms, experiencing hundreds of thousands of sufferings. Where and how will they be pacified? It is also said, "Alas!", "Achchu!", "Pity!", and so on, fierce Yama's servants holding sharp swords beat and chop, being born in Avīci and burned by blazing fire, having completely abandoned these, how can the perception of Dharma arise? Therefore, one should listen to the Dharma with reverence, for it will not be obtained later. Furthermore, those who thus devour each other, chase and frighten, destroy and devour, engage in intercourse with their mothers, such as: otters, kuras, deer, pigs, rurus, smisidhas, cattle, monkeys, insects, butterflies, crocodiles, buffaloes, elephants, bulls, owls, crows, cranes, vultures, dogs, foxes, jackals, peacocks, donkeys, and so on, being born without help, without intelligence and understanding, without memory and acting foolishly, without regard for what should be walked and what should not be walked, not knowing enemies and non-enemies, unable to speak and not reasoning, possessing bodies lacking splendor, therefore, how can the perception of Dharma arise for them?
