The Treatise Called "The Tree of Virtue" by Ratnakīrti. The Treatise Called "The Tree of Virtue." By Ratnakīrti. In Indian language: Kalyāṇakānto nāma prakaraṇa (梵文天城体:कल्याणकान्तो नाम प्रकरण,梵文罗马拟音:Kalyāṇakānto nāma prakaraṇa,Literal meaning: The Treatise Called "The Tree of Virtue"). In Tibetan: The Treatise Called "The Tree of Virtue." Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Having understood saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, suffering and happiness, bad migrations and good migrations, and their causes, one should then truly understand what is to be abandoned and what is to be adopted. Among these, bad migrations are the migrations of hell beings, pretas, and animals. Suffering is experiencing what is undesirable. The cause of obtaining it is non-dharma, namely, killing, taking what is not given, engaging in sexual misconduct, speaking falsely, slander, harsh speech, idle chatter, covetousness, malice, wrong view, drinking intoxicants, living by wrong livelihood, harming, stinginess, and worshipping and respectfully paying homage to tirthikas, and not having loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. These sixteen misdeeds are also divided into four ways: doing them by oneself having made a vow, sometimes doing them without having made a vow, causing others to do them, and rejoicing in others doing them. Each of these is divided into four aspects. These are non-dharma. Since these are only temporary, they should be abandoned until enlightenment. Others should also be induced to abandon them. Good migrations are the migrations of gods, humans, and asuras. Happiness is experiencing what is desirable. The cause of obtaining it is virtuous dharma, namely, abandoning killing, abandoning taking what is not given, abandoning engaging in sexual misconduct, abandoning speaking falsely, abandoning divisive speech, refraining from harsh speech, abandoning idle chatter, abandoning covetousness, abandoning malice, abandoning wrong view, abandoning drinking intoxicants, abandoning living by wrong livelihood, abandoning harming, abandoning stinginess, and not respectfully worshipping and paying homage to

Abandoning wrongdoing, abandoning the lack of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, turning away from the sixteen misdeeds. Taking these as vows, occasionally practicing them, causing others to practice them, rejoicing in others' practice, each of which is divided into four, this is the undeluded Dharma. Because he is the supreme spiritual friend, one should accept him until attaining enlightenment. Others should also be led into this. Likewise, protecting the lives of others, and also giving one's own life, protecting the possessions of others, and also giving one's own possessions. Protecting the wives of others, and also giving one's own wife. Speaking truthfully, speaking words that protect others, speaking pleasant words, speaking faultless words, wanting to bestow all perfections upon all sentient beings, wanting to completely liberate all sentient beings from all unwanted things such as killing, trading, beating, etc., and also truly believing in the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Drinking the nectar of the Tathagata's Dharma, living purely, respectfully serving sentient beings, giving as much as one is able, respectfully taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, without any other teacher besides them, offering and prostrating with reverence, completely immersing oneself in all things, and love preceded by great compassion for all sentient beings, and the ten perfections that will be explained. Taking these as vows, occasionally practicing them, causing others to practice them, rejoicing in others' practice, each of which is divided into four, this is the Dharma to be entered into. Because he is the supreme spiritual friend, one should commit to it until one has not attained enlightenment. Others should also be led into this. The aggregates of samsara are the truth of suffering, and suffering should be fully understood. The cause of obtaining it is the clinging to the aggregates as permanent, pleasurable, self, and belonging to self, which is necessarily prior.
