Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata. Maitreya. Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata. Maitreya. Herein lies the Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata. In Sanskrit: Dharma Dharmatāvibhaṅga. (Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata). Homage to the noble youthful Mañjuśrī! Because, having known, some are to be abandoned, and others are to be realized, therefore, wishing to distinguish them from their characteristics, this treatise is composed. All of these are summarized by two: dharma and dharmata. What is closely indicated by dharma is saṃsāra. What is closely indicated by dharmata is the nirvāṇa of the three vehicles. How the two and speech appear, the non-veridical parikalpita is the characteristic of dharma; the appearance of non-existence is non-veridical. Parikalpita is merely the conceptualization of everything as meaningless. Suchness, without the distinction of grasper, grasped, speech, and what is to be spoken, is the characteristic of dharmata. Because of the appearance of non-existence, delusion is the cause of universal affliction, like seeing an illusory elephant, and so on. It is also so because existence is not seen. If either non-existence or appearance does not exist, then delusion and non-delusion, universal affliction and purification, will not consequently occur. These two are neither one nor different, because of the difference and non-difference of existence and non-existence. Understanding dharma in six ways is unsurpassed: namely, characteristic and establishment, one and non-different, pervasive and, common and uncommon, the appearance of grasper and grasped as unreal. Characteristic, establishment, one, and non-different, etc., are as briefly stated before. Whatever revolves in it is pervasive, namely, sentient beings and the container world. The container world is known as being like the common. The sentient being world is common and uncommon. Because of birth and, terminology and, subsequent grasping and, taming and, qualities and, faults acting mutually, they are mutually sovereign.

It is common. Location and, consciousness and, action and happiness, suffering and, death and, birth and, bondage and, liberation are uncommon because of their uncommonness. The appearance of being apprehended externally in common is the very consciousness of the apprehender, but there is no meaning apart from consciousness, because it is common. The object of the uncommon apprehended consciousness, other minds, etc., are not objects of each other for both meditative and non-meditative apprehending consciousnesses, because for the non-meditative, the appearance of one's own aspectual conceptualization is very vivid. Meditation is also in the realm of samadhi, because its image is very vivid. If the appearance of being apprehended does not exist, then the non-existence of the appearance of the apprehender is also well established. Therefore, the conceptualization that the appearance of the apprehended and the apprehender do not exist is well established. Because the beginningless complete arousal is well established, the two are not established and are well established. The realization of the nature of reality through six aspects is unsurpassed: characteristic, pervasive abiding, discernment, touch, recollection, and approaching its essence, it is greatly realized. Characteristic is as briefly stated. Pervasive abiding is all phenomena and the collection of words of all twelve scriptures. Discernment is all the paths of joining together that are based on the Mahayana sutras and gathered by proper attention. Touch is the experience of realizing Suchness through the path of seeing, because of having attained the correct view, and it is joined with direct perception. Recollection is all the paths of meditation that are gathered by the aspects of enlightenment that are touched, which eliminate its impurities. Approaching its essence is that from Suchness having become without impurity, in all aspects only Suchness appears, that is the complete accomplishment of the transformation of the basis. The realization of the transformation of the basis through ten aspects is unsurpassed: essence, entity, person, difference, need, place, attention, application, and fault.
