are the four dhyanas. Those four dhyanas are workable and harmless, which is the complete samadhi. Thus, with the complete purification of samadhi, the abhijñas are accomplished, namely, the abhijña of miraculous power, the abhijña of the divine ear, the abhijña of knowing the minds of others, and the three kinds of vidyā mentioned earlier. Therefore, because of the perfection of wisdom and conduct, the Bhagavan attained the perfection of the teacher. Thus, the perfection of wisdom and conduct is shown to be the cause of the perfection of the teacher. The term "Sugata" indicates that one goes to the place where one should go. Because one is a Sugata, one is a Sugata, just like completely eradicating a disease, never to return. Complete understanding without remainder is Sugata, because one has understood all that is to be known without remainder, just like a perfectly filled vase. Moreover, by possessing this meaning, it is a superior distinction from outsiders and śrāvakas, etc., because outsiders cannot be non-returning through perfect understanding. Śrāvakas, etc., and ordinary beings, although non-returning, do not have complete understanding, because there is an obstruction of wisdom for all that is to be known. Again, the Bhagavan is a Sugata, because of completely understanding and realizing, therefore he is also called Sugata. Thus, from possessing wisdom and conduct and attaining the perfection of the teacher, the Bhagavan is employed as the teacher. By proclaiming the two terms "knower of the world, unsurpassed tamer of beings," it is also explained that the teacher has two functions, namely, observing the world with and without faculties, and then subduing those with faculties. Among them, the term "knower of the world" indicates observing whether one has faculties or not. Because the knower of the world observes the world with and without faculties, therefore he is called the knower of the world. For example, the Bhagavan observes three times during the day and three times during the night with the Buddha's eye, who is declining, who is bound, who

is terrifying. Who is liberated from the evil realms? Who falls into the evil realms? Who is led by the hand and placed in the heavens and liberation? Who has not generated roots of virtue, causing them to arise? Whose roots of virtue have been generated, causing them to be fully matured? Whoever's roots of virtue are fully matured, causing them to be completely liberated? Thus, he contemplated. The term "Tamer of Men" indicates the taming of those who possess good fortune. Having observed the worlds of those with and without fortune, he applies taming to those who can be tamed and acts in a manner of taming, thus taming those who possess good fortune. The nature of taming is guidance, and therefore, whoever is tamed here is the nature of taming. The mention of "unsurpassed" is to emphasize the object of taming as particularly excellent, that even beings difficult to tame are tamed. For example, the venerable Delightful Beauty, Angulimala, Utpalavardhana, and Kashyapa, who were greatly afflicted by desire, hatred, and delusion, were tamed. Because he is supremely immaculate and without fault, having abandoned desire, affliction, and pleasure, and having severed the two extremes associated with the Smokers, he realized the Middle Way. Therefore, after taming, there is no turning back from the ultimate goal of Nirvana, and thus he is called the Tamer of Men. If it is said that the Blessed One is called the Tamer of Men because he tames those who possess good fortune, then how should one understand those who do not possess good fortune? It is because he rescues them from the suffering and decline of the evil realms and places them in the bliss of enjoyment and the happiness of the good realms, and so forth. Those whose faculties are undetermined refer to those who do not possess good fortune. For those who possess good fortune and whose faculties are determined, he establishes them in the path of the Shravakas and other Bodhisattvas, according to their respective faculties. Because of the condition of undetermined faculties, he turns those who possess strength away from inferiority and places them in the most excellent position. The term "Teacher of Gods and Humans" indicates that he closely shows to whom he is the most excellent teacher. At all times, the Blessed One equally shows all sentient beings the path to heaven and liberation, and therefore he is a teacher.
