Commentary on the Recollection of the Buddha Asaṅga Commentary on the Recollection of the Buddha Asaṅga In Sanskrit: Buddha anusmṛti vṛtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Recollection of the Buddha. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Thus, the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Beings, the Unsurpassed One, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, is called the Buddha Bhagavan. From the greatness of his qualities, in order to generate joy in the Tathagatas, therefore, the common recollection of the Buddha is taught first. Secondly, in order to teach the means of supremely accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings, it is the unique quality of the Bodhisattvas. Briefly, how can the greatness of the qualities of the Tathagatas be clearly expressed? With nine words, the bonds are cut in sequence, thereby showing the perfect teacher. In order to show the nature of realization. What is the cause? Thus, the Bhagavan sees sentient beings who are fortunate and unfortunate, and after understanding, he tames those who are fortunate, therefore the teacher is firmly established. Thus, for the sake of the teacher, the greatness of his qualities is clearly expressed. Among them, the term "Bhagavan" indicates the cutting of bonds. Because he possesses the power to conquer, he is called Bhagavan. It should be understood as a definitive term. Furthermore, how is it that the teacher is perfect here by cutting the bonds? Because he conquered the Mara of the Son of Gods, he first attained the perfect teacher. The words "Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha" show the perfect teacher. The perfect teacher is also of two kinds, namely the nature of the teacher and the nature of understanding. The teacher is also called the Bhagavan Tathagata because he teaches without error. Because it is as it is,

The meaning of teaching the Dharma without inversion. There are two aspects to understanding: the perfection of abandonment and the perfection of wisdom. Because of possessing the perfection of abandonment, one is called Bhagavan. Because one destroys the enemy of afflictions, one is called Arhat. Because of abandoning all non-virtuous dharmas and possessing the perfection of wisdom, one is called the Perfectly Awakened Buddha. Because he understands the truth without inversion, he is a perfect teacher. Because he teaches the Dharma without inversion, abandons all afflictions, and understands all dharmas, this teacher is superior to the teachers of other traditions who teach inverted dharmas and have not abandoned all afflictions. Although Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also certainly abandon all afflictions, they do not demonstrate the aspects of all dharmas, nor do they directly realize the aspects of all dharmas. Therefore, this teacher is superior because he demonstrates all aspects. Thus, because he teaches all dharmas without inversion, is free from all faults, and directly and completely awakens to the aspects of all dharmas, it is known from the Bhagavan. Therefore, such a Bhagavan, by demonstrating the aspects of all dharmas, attains perfection, as it is said. The term "endowed with knowledge and conduct" indicates the cause of the teacher's perfection. Regarding knowledge and conduct, right view, which is the eighth limb of the Noble Eightfold Path, is knowledge. The remaining limbs are conduct. One who has not seen cannot walk without feet. Therefore, the three trainings are called knowledge and conduct. The training in higher wisdom is called knowledge. The training in higher mind and higher discipline is conduct. Because wisdom leads, conduct is referred to as feet. Also, knowledge is mentioned first because discipline and concentration are completely purified by its complete purification. Therefore, because the eye of wisdom shows

Therefore, just as one walks with the two feet of discipline and concentration, it is called "foot." These three are taught as "learning," and among these three, wisdom is the first to be grasped, so it is called "wisdom." Because these "feet" are the initial ones, they are endowed with the four perfections of perfect discipline, perfect ritual, perfect conduct, and perfect sphere of activity. Initially, they abide in the happiness of the mind, so they are called "feet." Furthermore, for these three, wisdom manifests the knowledge of remembering past lives, the knowledge of knowing death and birth, and the knowledge of knowing the absence of outflows. This wisdom refers to when the Bhagavan was sitting under the Bodhi tree, and in the first and second watches of the night, he remembered the past and future abodes, observed the endless cycle of death and birth, and in the third watch, he attained complete enlightenment by realizing what should be abandoned. Having abandoned all that, he manifested complete enlightenment and attained all the knowledge of the absence of outflows. Therefore, wisdom is the guide, and discipline and so on are perfect. Among them, perfect discipline means being endowed with discipline, being restrained by the Pratimoksha, having perfect ritual, perfect sphere of activity, and regarding even the slightest transgression with fear, training properly in the objects of training. Such is complete purity of discipline. When discipline is completely pure in this way, then with the four perfections, concentration will also become completely pure. Among them, with the four perfections, one abides in mindfulness in all activities, conduct is perfect, the consciousness of the eye and so on does not grasp the characteristics of forms and so on, guarding the senses, and thus abiding in mindfulness in the complete purity of discipline, the doors of the senses are closed, and concentration is achieved. With any concentration, one can reach the supreme bliss, and these are also concentration.
