Verses on the Quintessence of the Great Vehicle. Shakya Shri. Verses on the Quintessence of the Great Vehicle. Shakya Shri. In Sanskrit: Mahayana Upadesha Gatha. In Tibetan: Verses on the Quintessence of the Great Vehicle. Homage to the venerable and invincible protector Mipam. The hard-to-find leisure is quickly destroyed. The world's karmic results are suffering. Abandon that and meditate on emptiness and compassion. That is the essence of the Sugata's teaching. A person who desires happiness accumulates merit. Meditate on that as being without inherent existence. Knowing no inherent existence is the best merit. Therefore, merit is the cause of happiness. Happiness is attained by the power of merit. Therefore, people should accumulate merit. That should be practiced again and again. From this very day, one should desire and practice it. All phenomena are the appearance of one's own mind. Its nature is clear light, without defilement. Emptiness and compassion are a single taste. Meditating on that, the result is supreme enlightenment. In order to accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings, generate the two supreme bodhicittas. Possessing the essence of emptiness and compassion, the object of meditation, the result is the attainment of the three kayas. The precious thought is connected with the two minds. The practice is taking on hardships and acceptance. Knowing that in all ways there is no object of focus. The sons of the Buddha are not discouraged by harm. The bodhicitta is without arising, ceasing, or abiding. Vastly skilled in the meaning of sentient beings. The path of the two accumulations without interruption is the essence of emptiness and compassion. Like a dream, it is not external. Like an illusion, it has no true meaning. Like space, it is devoid of characteristics. All phenomena are naturally clear light. From the nature of clear light itself, the basis of unborn arising, with the two bodhicittas following each other, one should practice the benefit of all sentient beings. Turn away from sin with the three vows. Accomplish the accumulation of merit with the two stainless ones. Tame one's own mind by abiding in equanimity. That is the practice of the great being. The mind always desires enlightenment. Actions strive for the benefit of embodied beings. Knowing that happiness and suffering are like a dream, the wise accomplish the benefit of others. Take the essence of leisure with discipline. Take the essence of life with hearing. Take the essence of the teachings with practice. Its essence is benefiting others. Rely on mindfulness by abiding in one-pointedness. Accumulate the two accumulations with bodhicitta. Equalize with unfabricated vision.
