The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, Jowo Je Atisha. The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, Jowo Je Atisha. In Sanskrit: Bodhipāthapradīpaṁ. In Tibetan: The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. Homage to the Bodhisattva Manjushri Kumara! Having paid homage with great reverence to all the Buddhas of the three times, their Dharma, and the Sangha, at the urging of the good disciple Jangchub Ö, I shall illuminate the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. Small, Medium, and Supreme, know them as three types of individuals. Their characteristics are very clear; I shall write down their individual distinctions. Whoever, by whatever means, seeks only the happiness of samsara for their own sake, know them as the lowest individual. Turning their back on the pleasures of existence, their nature is to turn away from sinful actions. Whoever seeks only their own peace, that individual is called the medium individual. Whoever wishes to completely end all the suffering of others through the suffering belonging to their own continuum, that individual is the supreme one. For those noble beings who desire supreme enlightenment, I shall explain the correct methods taught by the lamas. In front of complete Buddha images, paintings, etc., and sacred stupas, offer flowers, incense, and whatever objects are available. Also, the seven-branch offering spoken of in the Kunjang Chö, with an unwavering mind until reaching the heart of enlightenment. With great faith in the Three Jewels, kneeling with both knees on the ground, after joining the palms, first take refuge three times. Then, with loving-kindness as a preliminary for all sentient beings, looking at the bodies of beings suffering from birth in the three lower realms, death, transference, etc., tormented by suffering, wishing to liberate beings from the cause of suffering, vowing without turning back, generate the mind of enlightenment. Whatever the benefits of generating such an aspirational mind, Maitreya has well explained it in the Sutra of the Array of Trees. By reading that sutra or listening to a lama, one will come to know the immeasurable qualities of the complete mind of enlightenment.

Having done that, from then on, as a reason, one should generate the mind again and again in this way. In the Sutras Requested by Brave Giving and others, the merit of this is excellently explained. Of those, about three verses, are briefly written here. The merit of the Bodhi mind, if it had a form, then the entire realm of space would be filled, it would be even wider than that. Hundreds of thousands of Ganges sands of Buddha-fields, completely filled with jewels by someone, is surpassed by offering this to the protector of the world. Whoever joins their palms, turns their mind to Bodhi, this offering is especially excellent, there is no limit to it. Having generated the mind of aspiring to Bodhi, one should universally increase it with many efforts, and in order to remember it in other lives as well, one should completely protect the precepts as spoken. Apart from the vow of entering the mind, the true aspiration will not increase. Those who want to increase the aspiration for perfect Bodhi, therefore, should strive and definitely take this vow. Of the seven types of individual liberation, those who constantly have other vows, and the vow of the Bodhisattva, are qualified, otherwise not. The seven types of individual liberation, and what the Tathagata has said, the light of pure conduct is excellent, it is considered the vow of a monk. Of the Bodhisattva grounds, with the well-spoken discipline ceremony, one should take the vow from a virtuous teacher who has true characteristics. The ceremony of the vow, and oneself abiding in the vow, being able to bestow the vow, having compassion, one should know is a virtuous teacher. One should strive for this, if one cannot find such a person, then the ceremony of taking the vow from others should also be truly explained. Regarding this, the past Manjushri, when he became Aparajita, how he generated the Bodhi mind, as it is said in the Sutra of the Ornament of Manjushri's Buddha-field, similarly it is clearly written here. In front of the protectors, generate the perfect Bodhi mind, invite all beings as guests, and liberate them from samsara. Hostile mind, angry mind, and stinginess and jealousy, from now until attaining supreme Bodhi, should not be done. One should practice pure conduct.
