Compassion, is it the three, such as the suffering of suffering? Or, with the eight sufferings such as birth, may compassion eliminate all the sufferings of those suffering beings, that is its definition. Compassion focused on beings who commit misdeeds is the root of those sufferings mentioned above, or for beings who engage in non-virtuous actions, may compassion eliminate all non-virtue, that is its meaning. Compassion focused on beings who have not been liberated due to not possessing the causes and conditions is that beings do not possess virtuous friends and have not heard the Dharma. Regarding this, the sutra says, "Do not rely on virtuous friends, do not listen to the Dharma," for beings who have not been liberated, may compassion liberate them, that is its meaning. Joy is rejoicing for those beings who possess wealth, Dharma, and happiness. Joy focused on perfecting one's own conducive conditions is rejoicing at oneself possessing vast roots of virtue. Joy focused on the taste of the sublime Dharma is that oneself and others rejoice through hearing the taste of the Dharma, and obtaining the taste of contemplation and meditation. Equanimity is that for actions that benefit beings, equanimity with connection and without connection is: for beings with connection, do; for beings without connection, do not do; without making such distinctions, equally benefit both, that is its definition. The eight worldly dharmas, summarized by words such as gaining and not gaining, are like this: for happiness and suffering, praise and blame, fame and infamy, without liking and disliking, abiding in a state of equanimity. Regarding this, the eight worldly dharmas refer to gaining and not gaining, and so on. Because these eight dharmas are widely known and exist in the world, they are called the eight worldly dharmas. Regarding these eight dharmas, how does one abide in a state of equanimity? Like this, when I obtain perfect enjoyment, I have no attachment to it, and even if enjoyment diminishes or is not obtained, there is no sense of loss or displeasure, that is equanimity without liking and disliking for gaining and not gaining. My loving friend uses incense and sandalwood on my body.

If one anoints with ghee and other substances, and performs service and attentive care, one will not be delighted and attached to the pleasure of reverence. If an enemy inflicts blows and the like on my body, I will not be angry at that either, and I will gladly endure the suffering of blows, and not feel pain. This is called equanimity, which has no liking or disliking for pleasure and pain. If a friend of mine speaks of my lineage and praises me with pleasant words, I will not be pleased and arrogant. If an enemy reveals and proclaims my faults, I will not be displeased and discouraged. This is called equanimity, which has no liking or disliking for praise and blame. If my virtues are heard and known by many people, I will not think, "I am a virtuous person, known by many people, my virtues have been proclaimed and not obscured," and be pleased with the proclamation of virtues. If my virtues are not heard and known by many people, I will not be displeased, thinking, "My virtues have not been proclaimed and have disappeared." This is the meaning of equanimity, which has no liking or disliking for the proclamation and non-proclamation of virtues. The meaning of "collection" is the words above. For the complete collection, the equanimity that focuses on time and non-time is that one completes and enjoys the collection of one's own virtues, without distinguishing "this time should be done, this time should not be done," but always enjoys it. The four immeasurables are the realm of Brahma. I have done this for the purpose of all meditations, Having done and compiled this for the benefit of sentient beings, May all beings quickly be free from obscurations and attain Buddhahood!
