Merely examining is delightful, those with the nature of arising and ceasing, those abilities that accomplish things, know that it is the conventional truth of self-nature. Even being delightful without examination, it also relies on the preceding primary cause, so that the subsequent result arises. Therefore, if the conventional truth has no cause, then saying "it doesn't work" is also good. If the proximate cause of this is true, then speak it out. The self-nature of all things follows the path of reason, it can dispel the desires of others, therefore there is no room for argument. For those who neither acknowledge existence, nor acknowledge non-existence, nor acknowledge both existence and non-existence, even with a firm attitude, one cannot make any accusations. Therefore, in reality, no thing is established. Therefore, the Tathagatas declare that all dharmas are unborn. Because it accords with the ultimate truth, this is called the ultimate truth. In reality, it is liberated from all collections of elaboration. Because there is no arising and so on, unborn and so on are impossible. Because its essence is negated, its verbal sound is impossible. For negation without an object, combining is not reasonable. Even relying on conceptual thought, it is only conventional truth, not ultimate truth. Then, since it has been realized, its self-nature is manifest, why can't the unskillful people realize such things? It is not so, because of the heavy habitual tendencies from beginningless time, being imposed on things, therefore all beings cannot realize it directly. For its removal of imputation, with the reason that knows, the knowable is known, the yogic masters are clearly manifest. With the distinction born from the treatises, after abandoning the subject, among the wise and women and children, for the things that have become famous, the provable and the to-be-proven things, all enter completely and truly. If it is not so, then how should the acceptance of "the basis is not established" and so on be established? I do not negate things with the nature of appearance, therefore the establishment of the establisher and the to-be-established is not confused. Therefore, from the beginningless cycle of existence, similar to the realization of existence and non-existence

It is the seed itself. It should be inferred subsequently. This does not arise from the power of things, Because that does not exist. The self-nature of things, Is a vast negation. Since it arises gradually, it is not sudden, It is neither constant arising nor annihilation. Therefore, because it is like habituation, It is initially born from its own kind. Therefore, views of permanence and annihilation, Reside for a long time in this treatise. The reversal and the following, Are like seeds, sprouts, twigs, and so on. The wise who understand the selflessness of phenomena, By habituating to the absence of self-nature, From what arises from inversion, Eliminate afflictions and obscurations without remainder. The entities of cause and effect, Because they are not inverted in conventional truth, From defilement to purification, etc., The establishment is not confused. Thus, the cause and effect, After this Dharma is established, The aggregates are also without defilement, Suitable for this treatise. From a pure cause, A pure result arises. Like the discipline arising from right view, The limbs and so on are extremely pure. Likewise, from the impure, An impure result arises. Like what arises from the power of wrong views, Such as sexual misconduct, etc. Because there is harm from valid cognition, What exists by focusing on things, Like the knowledge of mirages, etc., Is completely inverted and mistaken. Therefore, what arises from that power, All the practice of the perfections, Like what arises from the inversion of self and mine, Is weak in strength. What arises from not focusing on things, The result is great, Because it arises from the cause of increase, Like the sprouts, etc., of a complete seed. What becomes cause and effect, Is also only knowledge, Whatever is one's own establishment, That abides in knowledge. By relying solely on mind, One should know that external objects do not exist. By relying on this method, also in that, One should know extreme selflessness. Those who ride the chariot of the two methods, Holding the reins of reason, They therefore, as they are, Obtain the nature of the Great Vehicle. Without experiencing pervasiveness and freedom, etc., Abiding in immeasurable causes, Even if one becomes the crown of the world, One has not truly experienced it. This true and pure nectar, Is the cause of pure compassion.

Of. Other than the Tathagata, It is not the enjoyment of others. Therefore, for those with wrong views, For sentient beings attached to sectarianism, Those sentient beings who follow that reasoning, Compassion will naturally increase. Those endowed with wisdom and wealth, towards other schools, How they see the absence of essence, Thus, to protect them, Reverence will arise exceedingly. A Commentary on the Ornament of the Middle Way. Acharya Shantarakshita and other noble ones who have reached the other shore of the ocean of accomplished tenets, completed this work by taking the immaculate pollen of the lotus feet of the lords upon their heads. It was translated, revised, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Surendrabodhi and the reviser, the monk Yeshe De. The Ornament of the Middle Way, by Shantarakshita.
