The Ornament of the Middle Way Shantarakshita The Ornament of the Middle Way Shantarakshita In Sanskrit: Madhyamika Alankara Karika. In Tibetan: The Ornament of the Middle Way. Homage to youthful Manjushri! These phenomena of self and other's tenets, if truly said to be one, or because they are devoid of the nature of many, are without inherent existence, like reflections. Because fruits are connected in sequence, permanent things are not of a single nature. If each fruit is different, then they degenerate from permanence. By the wisdom arising from meditation, those who speak of knowable things as uncompounded, even in their systems, are not one, because they are related to sequential knowledge. If the earlier consciousness follows the nature of the knowable, then the earlier consciousness also becomes the later, and the later also becomes the earlier in the same way. If its essence does not arise in the places of the earlier and later, then like uncompounded consciousness, it should be known to arise momentarily. If it arises by the power of the earlier and earlier moments, then this does not become uncompounded, like mind and mental factors. If you want these momentary phenomena to arise independently in these, then because they do not depend on others, they will either always exist or not exist. There is no ability to perform a function, and if you want that, what is the use of examining it? Like examining the beauty or ugliness of a eunuch's genitals, what benefit is there for those with desire? If it is not moment by moment, then the person cannot be pointed out, so clearly understand that it is devoid of the nature of one and many. Because they are connected with different directions, how can pervasive things become one? Because there are obscurations and non-obscurations, etc., even gross things are not one. Whether they are attached or surrounded, or exist without interval, whatever is the nature of looking at one atom in the center, Looking at other atoms is also that. If it is said to be the same, if that is so, will earth, water, etc., increase in that way? If the face of looking at other atoms is considered to be other, then how can the extremely small atom become one without parts? Atoms are established as being without inherent existence. Therefore, things like eyes and objects, many spoken of by self and others, are manifest as being without inherent existence.

That which is created by its own nature, its qualities are the self. Its common and specific characteristics, all those are connected with it. From the nature of consciousness and mind, arises great inversion. Whatever is not the nature of mind, that is the essence here, is knowledge. In the single, indivisible nature, the nature of the three is unreasonable. The present awareness of self-nature is not the object of action and agent. Therefore, this is both the nature of knowledge and can know the self. How can it know the nature of other meanings? Its nature is not in other things, through what to know it, and also know other things? Knowledge and the meaning of what is to be known, because they want them to be different. For the parties with knowledge, in fact, these two are different. Because it is similar to the image, it can be perceived only by speculation. Who does not want the consciousness transformed by the image of meaning? For him, the image of external awareness does not exist either. A single knowledge is not different, so it will not become many images. Therefore, by its power, there is no setting that the meaning is known to change. Since it is not separated from the images, it will not become the only consciousness. If not, how should these two be called one? For white and other things, knowledge arises sequentially. Because it arises quickly, foolish people think they know it in an instant. The mind of the sound of bamboo, etc., if it arises very quickly, therefore, for the instantaneous arising, here also will not change because it is the same. Even if it is just the distinction of mind, it will not be known sequentially. Because it is not long-lasting, all minds are like arising quickly. Therefore, for all objects, it will not be held sequentially, but it will appear to be held simultaneously, just as the images are different. For the torch, there will also be the illusion of the wheel appearing at the same time. Because it appears very clearly, it is not connected by vision. Connecting the parts in this way is actually done by memory, not by vision, because it does not hold the past time. Whatever becomes its object, because it is destroyed, it is not clear. Therefore, this phenomenon of appearing as a wheel is not clear, but a kind of change. Single line
