Po'o. Perceiving external forms with the thought of no form internally, this is the second liberation. Being fond of ugliness, this is the third liberation. Having completely transcended the perception of form, with the perceptions of resistance ceasing and not attending to various perceptions, thinking 'space is infinite,' thus closely cultivating and abiding in the sphere of infinite space, this is the fourth liberation. Having in every way completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' thus closely cultivating and abiding in the sphere of infinite consciousness, this is the fifth liberation. Having in every way completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing at all,' thus closely cultivating and abiding in the sphere of nothingness, this is the sixth liberation. Having in every way completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, thus closely cultivating and abiding in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, this is the seventh liberation. Having in every way purely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, thus closely cultivating and abiding in the cessation of perception and feeling, this is the eighth liberation. These are the eight liberations. The nine successive abidings in meditative absorption are as follows: being secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, possessing joy and pleasure born of seclusion, closely cultivating and abiding in the first dhyana; then, with the cessation of initial application and sustained application, with inner purity, the mind becoming unified, without initial application and without sustained application, possessing joy and pleasure born of concentration, closely cultivating and abiding in the second dhyana; then, being without attachment to joy, abiding in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones describe this as being mindful, experiencing pleasure, abiding in equanimity, thus closely cultivating and abiding in the third dhyana without joy; then, having abandoned pleasure and also abandoned suffering, and the previous joy and displeasure,

Previously, there was no happiness because of cessation, and there was no suffering either. Having cultivated and abided in the fourth dhyana, which is pure in equanimity and mindfulness. And in all aspects, having completely transcended the perception of form, with the perceptions of obstruction ceasing and not taking various perceptions into mind, thinking that space is infinite, thereby cultivating and abiding in the sphere of infinite space. And in all aspects, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, thinking that consciousness is infinite, thereby cultivating and abiding in the sphere of infinite consciousness. And in all aspects, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking that there is nothing at all, thereby cultivating and abiding in the sphere of nothingness. And in all aspects, having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, thereby cultivating and abiding in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. And in all aspects, having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, thereby cultivating and abiding in the cessation of perception and feeling. These are the nine successive abidings of gradual abiding. Inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, the interval up to the emptiness of the nature of non-things, and the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha; these are called supramundane dharmas. Defiled Dharmas Question: World-Honored One, what are the defiled dharmas? The World-Honored One replied: Noble son, the five aggregates, the twelve sources, the eighteen elements, the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, and the four formless absorptions; these are called defiled dharmas. Undefiled Dharmas Question: World-Honored One, what are the undefiled dharmas? The World-Honored One replied: Noble son, the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, and the ten powers of the Tathagata.
