当行持大般若波罗蜜多时,若以不善巧方便行持三十七菩提分法,即是行持于相。并非行持般若波罗蜜多。同样,若行持于神通、波罗蜜多、禅定、四无量、无色定、五眼、如来十力、四无畏、四无碍解、佛之不共法等,即是行持于相。并非行持般若波罗蜜多。世尊,若菩萨摩诃萨行持般若波罗蜜多时,以不善巧方便作如是念:我正在行持般若波罗蜜多,即是行持于所缘。若菩萨摩诃萨作如是念:无我,彼即是行持于相。世尊,若菩萨摩诃萨作如是念:如是行持者,即是行持般若波罗蜜多。彼即是般若波罗蜜多之本体,若作如是念,彼即是行持于相。彼当知是菩萨摩诃萨之不善巧方便。其后,具寿舍利子对具寿善现如是说:具寿善现,此菩萨摩诃萨当如何知为不善巧方便?善现说:具寿舍利子,如是菩萨摩诃萨行持般若波罗蜜多时,若住于色,且特别信乐,且完全了知;若住于受,且特别信乐,且完全了知;若住于想,且特别信乐,且完全了知;若住于行,且特别信乐,且完全了知;若住于识,且特别信乐,且完全了知,彼即是住于色,且特别信乐,且完全了知;若住于受,且特别信乐,且完全了知;

When practicing the Great Perfection of Wisdom, if one practices the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment with unskilled means, it is practicing with characteristics. It is not practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Similarly, if one practices with supernormal knowledges, perfections, meditations, immeasurables, formless absorptions, the five eyes, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four specific correct knowledges, and the unmixed qualities of the Buddha, it is practicing with characteristics. It is not practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, and with unskilled means thinks, "I am practicing the Perfection of Wisdom," it is practicing with an object of focus. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva thinks, "There is no self," that is practicing with characteristics. Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva thinks, "Whoever practices in this way is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. That is the essence of the Perfection of Wisdom," if one thinks in this way, that is practicing with characteristics. That should be known as the unskilled means of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Then, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Venerable Subhuti, "Venerable Subhuti, how should this Bodhisattva Mahasattva be known as unskilled in means?" Subhuti said, "Venerable Shariputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, if he dwells in form, and especially delights in it, and fully knows it; if he dwells in feeling, and especially delights in it, and fully knows it; if he dwells in perception, and especially delights in it, and fully knows it; if he dwells in formations, and especially delights in it, and fully knows it; if he dwells in consciousness, and especially delights in it, and fully knows it, then he dwells in form, and especially delights in it, and fully knows it; if he dwells in feeling, and especially delights in it, and fully knows it;

And, especially with faith and complete understanding, if one abides in the thirty-seven dharmas of the path to enlightenment, with special faith and complete understanding, likewise with the five eyes, the six superknowledges, the six perfections, meditative concentration, immeasurables, and formless absorptions, and the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and the state of an Arhat, the state of a Pratyekabuddha, a Bodhisattva, and the dharmas of the Buddhas, if one abides in these dharmas, with special faith and complete understanding, then one abides in the dharmas of the Buddhas, with special faith and complete understanding, one engages in manifesting the dharmas of the Buddhas. By engaging in manifestation, one is said not to be completely liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and discomfort, and therefore not to be completely liberated from great suffering. Shariputra, endowed with life, if that great Bodhisattva is not even destined to realize the ground of a Hearer or a Pratyekabuddha, what need is there to mention that he will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? That is impossible. Shariputra, endowed with life, if a great Bodhisattva engages in the Perfection of Wisdom in that way, it should be known as unskillful in means. The Blessed One said: Shariputra, endowed with life, how should a great Bodhisattva engage in the Perfection of Wisdom so that it is known as skillful in means?
