Having spoken thus, the venerable Śāriputra addressed the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, from where did the bodhisattva mahāsattva who abides in the perfection of wisdom die and take birth here? And where will he be born after dying from here? After he had spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Śāriputra: Śāriputra, the bodhisattva mahāsattva who abides in the perfection of wisdom, know that this one has died and been reborn here from another Buddha-field, or from the heaven of Tuṣita, or from this very Buddha-field. This is the eighth bodhisattva. Śāriputra, among them, the bodhisattva mahāsattva who dies from among humans and is born in a place equal to humans, that is a non-returning bodhisattva mahāsattva, otherwise he is dull-witted, and will not quickly abide in the yoga of the perfection of wisdom. The doors of dhāraṇī and the doors of samādhi will also not quickly manifest for him. Those born here will have sharp faculties, and they will quickly accomplish this yoga. It is like the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom. Even when reborn, profound and profound dharmas will manifest to them, and they will later enter into the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom. Wherever they are born, they will please the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas. Shariputra, for those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who die and transmigrate from the Tushita heaven and are born here, their faculties will also become very sharp, and the six perfections will not be lost, and all the doors of dharani and the doors of samadhi will also manifest, this is called Bodhisattva-Mahasattva following the Dharma. Shariputra, when Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice the Perfection of Wisdom and diligently engage in cultivation, in order to fully ripen sentient beings, due to the power of unskilled means, even if they directly realize the fruit of stream-entry, they will not become arrogant because of it, this is called a stream-enterer. Shariputra, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who are unskilled in means, they cultivate the four dhyanas and practice the perfections, and even if they attain dhyana, they will be born in the long-lived gods. After dying from there, if they are born among the gods and humans of the desire realm, and please the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, then some of their faculties will become dull, and some will become sharp.
