Titled "Distinguishing the Three Vehicles." By Ratnakara Shanti. Titled "Distinguishing the Three Vehicles." By Ratnakara Shanti. In Sanskrit: Tīyāna Byāva Svāna Nāma. In Tibetan: Titled "Distinguishing the Three Vehicles." I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Who uses the three vehicles as mounts, extends his hand of generosity like Mount Meru, and unreservedly gives his own flesh and blood to beings, I prostrate to the Lord Shakyamuni, the protector of the three vehicles. To see the instructions of the gurus and many treatises, I will thus distinguish the three vehicles. The vehicles are seen as threefold, namely the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, and the Great Vehicle, which is profound and vast. Among these, the Hearer Vehicle is of two kinds, namely the Sarvastivadins and the Sutrantikas. Furthermore, the Sarvastivadins are divided into those of Kashmir and those of Central Country. I will briefly state my own tenets, namely that the consciousness arising from the senses and objects is without aspect, and that all sense objects are considered to be the nature of indivisible atoms residing in aggregation. All conditioned phenomena are impermanent and selfless, and space, cessation, and suchness are permanent dharmas, and one acts accordingly. These are established as the fruit being like a fire extinguished and thus unmanifest, and the prior aggregates with remainder, etc., and those are one fruit and the seven types of individuals who abide in the path of application, including the four pairs and eight types among the noble ones, as it is proclaimed, such as Stream-enterer, Stream-enterer fruit, Once-returner, Once-returner fruit, Non-returner, Non-returner fruit, Arhat-to-be, and Arhat, in that order. The Sarvastivadins of the Central Country are also the same in these respects, but in subtle points, they extensively view the Dhammapada from which they are derived. The Sutrantikas consider that consciousness arises with aspects, and that the aspects of consciousness also arise from other aspects similar to it, and that is also atomic color.

And it is considered to be of a nature that is in accordance with what follows. Furthermore, these do not accept the three times, and they consider unconditioned phenomena to be like the son of a barren woman. The fruit and the desire for it, and the abiding, are the same as before. However, the Sutra school followers are those who have the potential to become Pratyekabuddhas. This is the classification of the Hearer Vehicle. Entering the stream and abiding in it, and merely by the difference of faculties, like a rhinoceros horn wandering alone and the Sangha, conduct and four, becoming a Buddha changes from two to four. Understanding these is to realize that one wanders in samsara in accordance with the twelve links of dependent origination, and to realize that by its cessation one goes to nirvana. Here, it is as if only the immediate path of these has been explained, but the vows of discipline, etc., which are beneficial for obtaining the fruit, are the same as those of the Hearers, and therefore arise in them, and the nature of the fruit is also peaceful, abiding in the same way as the Hearers. For these, it is certain that abiding in the vows of discipline will arise, and the causes for realizing dependent origination will arise, like a merchant speaking the truth, because the actions related to it have been accumulated for hundreds of kalpas. How to meditate on dependent origination is not mentioned here, because one does not like extensive texts, and it is clearly explained in the Sutras. This is the classification of the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle. The Vehicle that possesses profundity and vastness is of two kinds: that which possesses only profundity, and that which possesses both profundity and vastness. These are called the Great Vehicle, and for these two divisions, previous teachers have also established them as the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Wisdom and the Great Vehicle of Secret Mantra. If one possesses only a little profundity, and similarly one possesses both profundity and vastness, then would the Vehicles not become four? Why are they classified as three Vehicles? There is no fault in this, because there is no difference in accomplishing the perfect benefit of oneself and others by abiding in the two truths. If so, why is it that only those who possess profundity, and
