Commentary on the Fourteen Root Downfalls of the Vajrayana by Laksmikara Commentary on the Fourteen Root Downfalls of the Vajrayana By Laksmikara In Sanskrit: Vajrayana-mula-patti-prtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Fourteen Root Downfalls of the Vajrayana. Homage to the noble Manjushri, the Youth! The characteristics of the seven things to be abandoned, with the body and speech of the Hearers as the main focus; the characteristics of the ten things to be abandoned, with the compassion of the Bodhisattvas as the main focus; and the characteristics of the fourteen things to be abandoned, with the union of skillful means and wisdom of the Great Secret Mantra Yogis as the main focus. Two of these are clear from other texts, so they are not discussed here. Regarding the liberation of the Great Secret Mantra Yogis, it is taught in reliance upon it. In general, there are the things to be attained, the distinctions of realization, and the methods of protection. Two of these are clear from the root tantras and the explanatory tantras, so they are not mentioned separately here. There are two methods of protection: vows and atonement. These are the object of the vow and the distinction of what is to be abandoned. As it is said: Atonement is all the Buddhas, dwelling perfectly in Evam (藏文,梵文天城体:एवं,梵文罗马拟音:evaṃ,汉语字面意思:Thus). Because it does not stray from the object, it is said to be a vow. Thus it is said. Therefore, according to the distinctions of the four empowerments, there are also four vows: as it is, not as it is, with intention, and with the distinction of ultimate. In summary, there are the vows of the family, the root, and the gross offenses. There are two types of family: common and special. There are three roots: according to the distinctions of the three empowerments. There are three gross offenses: according to the distinctions of body and so on. If one abides in the three atonements, such as the discipline of atonement, it is said that one will attain Buddhahood itself or the Great Vajradhara. As it is said in the context of the realization of the Vajra Peak: Having taken hold of the mind of enlightenment, not believing in other gods, having faith in the Three Jewels, relying on them and entering into them, abandoning killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and alcohol, even if one abides in the conduct of a householder, one should always practice the King of Vidyas. If one is ordained therein

Then, one will abide in the three vows. The Pratimoksha and Bodhicitta, are the Vidyadhara's own vows. As it is said, one should enter into its meaning. Here, what is not contradictory to them is the distinction of wisdom, not practicing the four natural dharmas, but knowing and practicing by the nature of suchness, because it has great meaning. In the practice of extreme non-elaboration, because there is no contradiction with things, it is not established as misdeeds, etc. Thus, in explaining the root vows, in general, what is harmful, what interrupts, and what makes impure, namely the three roots of virtue, the two siddhis, and one's own continuum and order. Among them, the main thing is that it interrupts both and causes one to fall into the three lower realms. The similar one interrupts both and falls into the three lower realms, but it is not severe suffering, etc. The intermediate one interrupts both, but it is the cause of falling into the lower realms, that is, it does not make a distinction. The small one interrupts worldly attainments. Also, in general, the practitioner is associated with the six afflictions and near afflictions. Again, there are two: the co-emergent and the imputed. Again, there are seven: preparation, main practice, transgression, non-transgression, favorable conditions, what should be learned, and arising from defilement. Arising has seven: empowerment, gathering, practice, the power of the assembly, recitation, making the mind weary, and confessing to ordinary people. Now we should enter the text, "To the teacher is contempt," as it is said, from whom one has not obtained the supreme empowerment, the teacher shows it, paying attention to it, the mind associated with afflictions, acting in combination with body, speech, and mind, generating afflictions with understanding or something special, abiding in nature, having power, being a dream, the eight branches are the main practice, and the preparation is as long as it is not complete. If other incomplete ones have the main branch, it is a great offense. If there are intermediate and small ones, then they are intermediate and small offenses. Like the three
