Chapter Three: Showing the Subjugation of Demons Such as Gods. Chapter Three: Showing the Subjugation of Demons Such as Gods. Although life in Samsara may remain long, demons exhaust all merits, so virtues cannot be accomplished. Therefore, to avert demons, one should perform great protection. Request: Please, Bhagavan, speak. Instruction: Among excellent reasoning, virtuous armies, and so on, what are the demons of view that have been spoken of? The chief's retinue and those belonging to his lineage constantly harm people on earth. To avert them, I will speak of their places, characteristics, and the means of protection and purification. Greatly increase respect for virtuous friends, and for the benefit of beings, listen and keep it in mind. Those who deeply enter the minds of practitioners and diligently create obstacles are the sons of gods, Brahma, and others, similar to the gods who protect the ten directions. The demons of Brahma and the gods of desire, as well as the formless gods, are not the ones who create obstacles. Elephant-faced ones and lotus garlands, etc., the ten leaders cause great harm. Thousands of types of demons belonging to their kind constantly harm people. The gods such as Brahma are in the upper direction, and below are the earth and the nagas. In the east are the races of gandharvas, in the south are kumbhandas, and in the west are the races of nagas. In the north are yakshas, in the east is Indra, in the south is Yama, and in the west is the lord of water. In the north are yakshas, and in the southeast are blood-eaters. In the southwest are those who are devoid of truth, in the northwest are cloud sounds, and in the northeast corner dwells Ishvara. One should carefully protect against the demons of the ten directions, who strive to prevent liberation and create obstacles. They think that one will transcend their own sphere of activity, and the splendor of merit enters the body, bringing retinue, gain, fame, reputation, and the arising of worldly samadhi. Because their minds praise merit, they can subdue many people and place great importance on meritorious things, disliking the accumulation of wisdom and constantly striving for words that lead to samsara. Some see forms in order to gain clairvoyance, thinking they have manifested immeasurable samadhi, and some receive prophecies in Buddha-fields.
