Commentary on the Fierce Tantra of Glorious Mahakala, Called the Great Cemetery. By Aśvaghoṣa. Commentary on the Fierce Tantra of Glorious Mahakala, Called the Great Cemetery. By Aśvaghoṣa. First: Explaining the Four Topics of the Tantra. In Sanskrit: Śrīmahākālatantrarudrakavamahāśmaśānanāmaṭīkā. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Fierce Tantra of Glorious Mahakala, Called the Great Cemetery. Homage to Glorious Vajra Ḍākinī! The body of Suchness, holding all perfections. The faces of the eight liberations are real, the sixteen hands of emptiness. The powerful subduer of demons, the four feet adorned with the four abodes of Brahmā. The lord of the mandala of eight goddesses who protect beings. Subduing fierce yakṣas, the body of great terror. With branches of hands adorning the crown of the head, I prostrate to you, Black One. If one practices especially during the destructive times of the future, Especially holding the teachings of the Victorious Ones, Destroying the darkness of the suffering of saṃsāra. The essence of Herukas, such as Vajrahṛdaya, Through the power of having received blessings, And through the power of the holy guru, I, even just a little, Through the teachings of the Vajra words, Will compose its commentary. The meaning of "equal to the sky," etc., is not explained here, but will be explained at the appropriate time. Speaking of the Vajra words, "Thus have I heard at one time," etc., Differentiating that well, differentiating through the connection of hearing, for the sake of complete transformation, all five are spoken with meaning. The teacher is Vajradhara, An emanation of Great Yamāntaka. Thus it is taught. He also dwells in the place of the Nirmāṇakāya of Svabhāva, in what is called the Great Cemetery. The meaning of "at that time" is that it is said to completely gather wrath. The Blessed One completely revealed the Dharma with the blessings of the samādhi called "sparkling like fire," He also, after removing the harm of the yakṣas, the one who compiled the Vajra words completely compiled them, which is the determined time. The meaning of those five, through the power of the collection, the so-called "Thus have I heard," is held without error through the power of the connection of the Vajra words.

It is also said to the retinue. "I" means that the compiler is qualified. "Thus" means that he has fully collected and narrated it. "Heard" means that from the words of the teacher, through the power of connection, collecting without error is hearing. "Time" refers to the time when the wheel of vajra words arises. "One" refers to the non-common display. Or, "Thus I have heard, at one time" refers to how the Blessed One dwells, just as how the four syllables of E-vam-maya are fully realized. The meaning is that the Blessed One abides in the nature of E-vam-maya. So, what is the self-nature of the letters of E-vam-maya? E is the complete purification of the earth element and the nature of the body, the place of great loving-kindness and skillful means, and is liberated from various forms. Vam is the complete purification of the water element and the nature of speech, holding the form of subduing violence through compassion and aspiration. Ma is the complete purification of the fire element and the nature of mind, joyfully giving with power, and dharma arises from the samadhi of subduing violence. Ya is the complete purification of the wind element and the non-dual vajra nature, completely taking the retinue with equanimity and the union of wisdom through the samadhi of destroying all demons. Time is when the compiler fully collects and narrates the dharma. Or, E is the place. Vam is the teacher. Ma is the complete acceptance of the retinue. Ya is collecting with special dharma. Also, what is specifically shown is that E is the source of dharma, the place and basis. Vam is where the body of the deity is perfected. Ma is possessing the approach of near accomplishment. Ya is accomplishing the activity, and such distinctions briefly show the meaning of the beginning. The Blessed One refers to the teacher, the glorious Vajradhara, which is also in two ways through the combination of the sound of bhaga (བྷ་ག,bhaga, bhaga, auspicious): the meaning of the six qualities such as power, and the meaning of subduing violence by gathering the retinue such as black powerful ones. Body, speech, and mind vajra refer to abiding by the distinctions of the earth element and so on.
