What are the miraculous feet endowed with diligence, etc.? They are the miraculous feet endowed with the desire for samadhi and the effort to abandon, the miraculous feet endowed with the diligence for samadhi and the effort to abandon, the miraculous feet endowed with the contemplation for samadhi and the effort to abandon, and the miraculous feet endowed with the mind for samadhi and the effort to abandon. The meaning of these sutras is this: Here, all the faults of samadhi become sixfold, as follows: namely, laziness, forgetting the object, sinking, agitation, non-attention, and attention. From this, sinking and agitation are combined into one fault. There are eight efforts to abandon them. What are the eight? They are faith, desire, diligence, and pliancy, these four, and mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity, these eight. Among them, the first is the antidote to laziness, and faith is to engage thoroughly in virtuous actions. Desire is to abide together with its intention. Diligence abandons laziness. Pliancy is said to be the miraculous foot of desire, for it is the very act of manifestly abandoning what is to be abandoned. Mindfulness abandons forgetting the object, and awareness abandons sinking and agitation. These are the miraculous feet of diligence and contemplation. Whatever is abandoned with effort by means of attention and equanimity is said to be the miraculous foot of mind. Therefore, these are said to be the four diligences. This is what is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Abiding in solitude, abiding free from desire, abiding in cessation, completely transformed by various abandonments, abandoning objects because of being separated from association with conditioned objects," this is called the miraculous foot endowed with abandonment. If the five branches are collected, then the four miraculous feet are the twenty aspects. What is miraculous power? Increase is miraculous power, because it is desired from the root ri dhū (Sanskrit, √dhṛ, to hold) meaning increase, hence from sārāyaṇa (Sanskrit, Nārāyaṇa).

Thus, all the qualities of the Buddha, such as the ten powers and fearlessnesses, which cause increase and attainment, are magical powers, that is, complete and perfect enlightenment. Because it is like a foot, it is called a foot; in terms of attainment, it is the foot of magical power. Although it is common, it is the means of the path, and these two feet are the antidote to the faults of samadhi, and are extremely excellent. The nature of these is the extremely wrathful mother, the wrathful-eyed mother, the radiant mother, and the large-nosed mother, who are the dakinis of the heart chakra. So, how many faculties are there? Five. What are the five? Faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom. Thus, in the path of application, the four dharmas that correspond to the part of discernment are the warm stage, the peak stage, the forbearance stage, and the supreme worldly dharma. Thus, when a Bodhisattva directs himself to stainless samadhi, just as warmth arises as a precursor to fire, the arising of the fire of wisdom from the mind is said to be the warm stage. That which abides together with the extremely excellent higher intention is the peak stage. That which is the nature of being tolerant in the mind is the forbearance stage. That which arises immediately after that forbearance is the supreme worldly dharma; in terms of near practice, this is that which corresponds to application. Thus, those that correspond to the part of discernment at the beginning, such as faith, are said to be the five faculties. Thus, faith is the mind's trust in existence and the path beyond the world, truth, and the Three Jewels, and is the faculty of faith. The effort to practice the dharmas generated by the faculty of faith is the faculty of diligence. There are four types of diligence: preliminary diligence, irreversible diligence, individually examining diligence, and accomplishing diligence. The dharma generated by diligence, repeatedly directed forward, without speech, is the faculty of mindfulness. The dharmas generated by the faculty of mindfulness are in the mind

That which, having completely abandoned all other terms, abides, that is the faculty of samadhi. Whatever thoroughly and individually understands and reflects upon the dharmas generated by the faculty of samadhi, that is the faculty of wisdom. Why is it called a faculty? Because it is the very source of the arising of virtuous dharmas, and it greatly increases the five aggregates of both defilement and purification. Having abandoned the faculty of wisdom, the four dakinis, the Heroic Mind Mother, the Miu Thung Mother, the Lanka Empowerment Mother, and the Wood Slender Mother, should be known as the pure aspects of faith, diligence, mindfulness, and samadhi. How many are the powers? Five. What are the five? They are just the faith and so on that were previously mentioned. Are the functions of the faculties and powers different? It is said: When faith and so on change, they change by relying on the guise of the faculties; when the opposing sides of non-faith, laziness, forgetfulness, distraction, and attention to the place of birth, and when perverse wisdom cannot be overcome, then it transforms into power, so the functions are different. The previously mentioned guardians of the earth of the wheel of speech, together with the faculty of wisdom, the Great Terrifier, the Wind Power Mother, the Wine Drinking Mother, the Goddess Blue Lotus Mother, and the Extremely Good Mother, should be known as pure aspects. How many are the branches of enlightenment? Seven. What are the seven? The branch of enlightenment of samadhi, the branch of enlightenment of diligence, the branch of enlightenment of joy, the branch of enlightenment of serenity, the branch of enlightenment of discriminating dharma, the branch of enlightenment of mindfulness, and the branch of enlightenment of equanimity. These branches are the enlightenment on the path of seeing, and the stainless wisdom is enlightenment. That which makes the mind that sees the truth into samadhi, that is the branch of enlightenment of samadhi. That which strives for that alone, that is the dili-
