The Collection of Writings of Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen JDol184 The Six Syllable Teachings Homage to the Guru and the Three Jewels! Homage to the noble Avalokiteśvara, the six-syllable vajra sound! The origin of this is as follows: From what was like a dark abyss in Tibet, the compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas emanated as the Tibetan kings, and the sun of the holy Dharma dawned. During the reigns of the three religious kings (grandfather, son, and grandson), the holy Dharma was initiated, established, propagated, and developed, all of which is widely known. Initially, when Lha Thothori Nyantsen was residing in Yumbu Lhakang Palace, first, the scripture in a box, the *Zamatok*, the crystal stupa, the hand seals, and so forth, appeared spontaneously from the sky. At that time, when a request was made to the Kashmiri scholar Lekjin to translate it, he was unable to translate it due to the lack of writing in Tibet. He said that this Dharma was profound and had great blessings, and that it would be good to have faith, respect, and offerings. The *pandita* then went to China. After that, the king made offerings with golden chang and lapis lazuli, and with faith, respect, prostrations, and circumambulations, it became very blessed and auspicious. Therefore, that Dharma became known as 'Nyenpo Sangwa' (Secret Sacred Dharma). After that, during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo, the *Zamatok* was translated, and it was understood to be the scripture of the six-syllable mantra, and it began to be propagated. After that, Trisong Detsen propagated and developed this Dharma, and therefore, this deity and this Dharma became known as the deity and Dharma of Tibet, spreading to many places, so that everyone knew it, and it was said that it was of great benefit to sentient beings. Many good deeds such as building statues, practicing meditation, and reciting mantras occurred, and many accomplished ones arose, as well as those with abilities and blessings, and many wise, virtuous, and accomplished ones appeared in succession, making the entire kingdom full of Dharma and auspiciousness, complete with merit, and it was said that the blessings and kindness were very great. Reciting mantras was initially called 'dzap', and 'dzap' is a Sanskrit word, which translates into Tibetan as 'recitation'. Therefore, saying 'do dzap' means to do recitation. Some Tibetan officials recite loudly, but that is not the intention of the Buddha. When doing 'dzap', the mantra must be recited clearly. This is the unanimous opinion of the great scholar translators of the past.

Thus it was spoken. In all the Sutras, both large and small, and in all the Tantric texts that teach recitation, the term 'འཛབ་' (Tibetan, recitation) is invariably translated as 'བཟླས་པར་' (Tibetan, repetition), and never as 'གྱེར་མར་' (Tibetan, chanting). By virtue of this, all scholars are free from confusion. The basis for the confusion of fools is this: initially, there was no Dharma in Tibet, and the Bon religion was prevalent. Later, when the Dharma came, people did not believe in the absence of chanting, and thus accumulated much negative karma through various slanders. To gradually correct these, some even altered the words of the Dharma to include chanting. This practice spread and became established, to the extent that some chanting also appeared in Mantras, and there arose the saying that Mantra practitioners meditate by chanting, which is known as the Nyingma (Tibetan, Old School). Thereafter, some of the New School also excessively imitated this practice, to the extent that chanting also appeared in Mantras, without realizing that the characteristics of Mantras had been lost, resulting in a decrease in blessings and power, and fewer accomplished masters with abilities. The earth's power diminished, and grains and vegetation, etc., no longer ripened well. Human and livestock diseases, conflicts, and other inauspicious events became prevalent, which is like practicing perverse Mantras. As the noble Nagarjuna said, and as later ones agreed: 'རིགས་སྔགས་ལོག་པར་བསྒྲུབ་པ་བཞིན།' (Tibetan) For Mantras to be blessed, they must possess the characteristics of Mantras. For this, the short, long, and very long syllables must not be mistaken or confused. A short syllable is the time it takes to blink an eye. A long syllable is twice that, and a very long syllable is three times that. The nature of the syllables, the end of all, exists within the blink of an eye. And so on, it has been clearly stated. Therefore, if one chants Mantras, it will lead to short syllables becoming long, long syllables becoming very long, and even longer than that, and even longer than very long, and even longer and longer than long, and so on, leading to many faults. Therefore, those who recite Mantras should abandon chanting, hold a rosary, and as previously stated, repeat clearly in a 'ཤ་ར་ར་' (Tibetan, clear) manner, so that blessings will also arise as previously stated. Now, one might ask, why do the scriptures say that sometimes one should perform recitation praises and offering praises? This is to dispel weariness, dullness, lethargy, sleep, and excitement during recitation, by offering excellent praises other than Mantras, offering beautiful offerings, and requesting the fulfillment of desires, etc. These are for these purposes, and not for chanting the Mantras themselves. This is absolutely not approved.' This was said by སྐྱེས་མཆོ (Tibetan, holy being). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
