Collected Works of Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen JDol52: Commentary on the First Chapter of the Great Commentary 'Stainless Light' 7-1 Commentary on the First Chapter of the Great Commentary 'Stainless Light' Commentary on the First Chapter of the Great Commentary 'Stainless Light' Oṃ guru buddha bodhisattvebhyo namo namaḥ (藏文:ཨོཾ་གུ་རུ་བུདྡྷ་བོ་དྷི་སཏྭེ་བྷྱོ་ན་མོ་ན་མཿ,梵文天城体:ओṃ गुरु बुद्ध बोधिसत्त्वेभ्यो नमो नमः,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ guru buddha bodhisattvebhyo namo namaḥ,Literal meaning: Om, Guru, Buddha, Bodhisattva, Homage, Homage) Having taken refuge in the Bhagavan, the Buddha of Manifestation, Avalokiteśvara, I shall briefly gather and explain the first chapter of the Great Commentary 'Stainless Light' spoken by him. In this context, 'The nature of emptiness and compassion,' and so forth, is a salutation to the profound nature of the Dharmadhatu. Emptiness, as explained in various pure treatises, has two meanings: emptiness of self-nature and emptiness of other-nature. Emptiness of self-nature means that all dharmas are empty of their own self-nature, that is, emptiness of non-substantiality. Emptiness of other-nature means that all dharmas are empty of anything other than the Dharmata, which is the nature of the basis of emptiness. The nature of non-substantiality is emptiness. Non-substantial emptiness refers to the negation of all dharmas in reality, like a rabbit's horn, being completely non-existent, and the abandonment by merely refuting and establishing. The Bhagavan called this the emptiness of emptiness. The emptiness of the nature of non-substantiality refers to the nature of the basis in which all conventional substantialities are non-existent from the beginning, neither refuted nor abandoned by establishment. The Bhagavan called this the non-empty emptiness. The great Vajradhara said in the later Tantra of the Glorious Sambuṭa, and Lord Maitreya also said: 'Persons and dharmas, are empty due to non-substantiality, that non-substantial substantiality, that emptiness is different from that.' And 'The two, non-substantial and non-substantiality, are the characteristics of non-substantiality.' Here, the differences between self-emptiness and other-emptiness, the differences between emptiness and the basis of emptiness, and the differences in the ways of emptiness of the two truths are explained. Furthermore, 'Knowing the emptiness of non-existence, likewise knowing the emptiness of existence, if one knows the emptiness of self-nature, it is said to know emptiness.' If conventional emptiness is divided, then imputed and distorted conventions are not established even as conventional truths. Other-powered and accurate conventions are naturally pure. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reality of things is not established by names, but is established in conventional truth. Therefore, although two kinds of emptiness are temporarily spoken of in conventional truth, they ultimately come down to two kinds of emptiness. Ultimate truth refers to the fact that any false, accidental dharma is not established. Therefore, although it empties these, its nature, the original nature of Dharma, does not change, and is completely established, so it is the emptiness of non-emptiness. Other-powered and true conventional truths are also the basis of emptiness. Therefore, if one understands the state of emptiness of the two truths and the three natures, merely the meaning of 'non-existence' and 'the basis of non-existence', and understands the meaning of self-emptiness and other-emptiness, and the meaning of the emptiness of emptiness and the emptiness of non-emptiness, then it can be said that one understands emptiness. If not, but asserts that everything is self-empty, or that everything is other-empty, then it is not a good understanding of emptiness, and it will become a wrong view of emptiness. That is its meaning. Similarly, the meaning of saying that all dharmas are without self-nature refers to the fact that the imputed and other-powered do not have their own nature, and that the Dharma-nature perfectly established truth also does not have the nature of all compounded things that are different from itself. As it is said: 'The edge of truth is, all compounded aspects, are all separated.' And 'Those with distinguishing characteristics are the realms emptied by adventitious dust. Those without distinguishing characteristics are not emptied by the supreme Dharma.' Therefore, the state of emptiness of the two truths, and what is the basis of emptiness, these in the way of negation and non-negation, are also called the annihilation emptiness of analyzing the aggregates, and the emptiness with all the excellent aspects. The venerable Manjushri said: 'The emptiness of analyzing the aggregates, like water trees, has no real meaning. The emptiness with all the excellent aspects will not change like that. No birth, no death, whatever is seen here, the object of emptiness is emptiness, not the analysis of the aggregates.' The venerable Avalokiteshvara also repeatedly declared this meaning, and the secret master Vajrapani and the holy Vajragarbha and others also declared it. The holy Nagarjuna also said: 'The unborn emptiness is one, and the emptiness of one life is one. The unborn emptiness is superior, and the emptiness of life is destruction.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
