The Quintessential Instructions on the Middle Way, Called 'Extraordinary' Homage to all the Lamas, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas! The ultimate truth is suchness, the self-nature of pure self; the ultimate truth is indivisible, all-pervading; selflessness is the essence of the Sugata, my supreme; the reality is the great Middle Way, unchanging. 1 Not understanding this meaning, in the confusion of delusion, at the time of the base (gZhi), arise the impermanent phenomena of samsara. The way to realize such a thing is called the path. When each is purified of its defilements, it is called the fruit. 2 This is a brief indication of the essential meaning of the Middle Way: what is to be realized is the Middle Way of the meaning of reality, and what realizes it is the Middle Way of experiential path. The base and the fruit are both included in the former. 3 Among them, the phenomena of existence are all that appears and sounds are conventional, the object of consciousness. The ultimate realm is wisdom, devoid of elaboration, primordially peaceful, the nature of nirvana. 4 Consciousness and wisdom, each has its own realm; conventional truth and ultimate truth, each has its own way of appearing as true; although the self-nature is one, it is liberated from the one; although the characteristics are contradictory, they are liberated from otherness. 5 The Victorious One (Buddha) spoke of endless aggregates, realms, and sources. All phenomena can be summarized by the aggregate of form, the source of mind, and the realm of phenomena. The elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, and the essence of things, 6 And the collection of containers, encompasses all that is formed. The source of mind is combined with similar things, and can be summarized as mind, intellect, and consciousness. The realm of phenomena can also be divided into the phenomena of the characterized, 7 The characterizing phenomena and the distinction of non-entities, a total of three categories. The first of these can be divided into three aggregates. Feeling can be summarized as pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neutral feeling. Thought can be divided into inverted thought and pure thought. 8 Pure thought is called correct thought. Through the distinction of body, speech, and mind, action arises. Depending on the situation, time, and things, 9 The imputed nature of names can be divided into three types. Space and obstruction, and non-arising, and non-existence after destruction, and the transformation of things, and the general characteristics of a vase, etc., depend on things, 10 The general characteristics of a non-existent vase, etc., can be divided into three types of non-entities. The worldly path and the path of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers of the Lesser Vehicle, and the state of the Great Vehicle Buddhas, can all be traversed. Twenty-four conditioned phenomena, one unconditioned phenomenon, this is the arrangement of the excellent and complete order of the Dharma. 11 The five bases of knowable objects, the three realms, the three existences, common and uncommon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The four truths and the distinctions between conceptual and non-conceptual, etc., are all taught as the twenty-five existences. Dharmadhatu (法界, *dharmadhātu*, dharmadhātu, the realm of dharma) is the ultimate truth, the essence of the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏, *tathāgatagarbha*, tathāgatagarbha, the womb of the thus-gone), which is eternal, all-pervasive, self-aware wisdom, possessing all aspects, the nature of complete purification, the nature of being free from elaboration, uncontaminated, and definitive. The nature of union, the lineage, and the ultimate realm, in this way, its nature has nine aspects. For this, the nature of the ultimate realm and the appearances for yogis are different. Although this realm is not the cause of samsara (轮回, *saṃsāra*, samsara, cyclic existence), without it, samsara would not exist. Just as the circle of wind relies on space, it is established as the basis of samsara. The nature of lineage has no awakening or non-awakening. Because of this, the cause of growth and birth is expanded. Therefore, it is merely established as awakening. The term 'this increases, that also increases' is applied. All accumulated habitual patterns, merely clear awareness, appearing as self, possessing various object appearances. Just as many water droplets do not gather, there is no name of a great river, and if waves churn on it. The difference between waves and the river is difficult to distinguish. Alaya-vijnana (阿赖耶识, *ālayavijñāna*, alayavijnana, storehouse consciousness) is like a great river, the accumulated habitual patterns from beginningless time are like gathered water. The current habitual patterns are newly added seeds, and the previously mixed continuum is the Vipaka (异熟果, *vipāka*, vipaka, result of karma). There is no difference in substance, like water. The nature is clear, but the appearance of objects is not clear, it focuses on all objects of focus. It has the power to show all containers and contents, it is limitless and equal to all. The seven consciousnesses are like the waves of a river, the transformations of clarity and awareness, those are also the same as the awareness of Alaya-vijnana (阿赖耶识, *ālayavijñāna*, alayavijnana, storehouse consciousness), but those do not have the nature of mind. Although water waves and the river are the same in water nature, the waves do not have the nature of the river. The five dharmas taught in the Mahayana (大乘, *mahāyāna*, mahayana, great vehicle) are: the nature of the movement of sound and mind, the general aspect of the place of expression is the reason, applying a label to this, it is called the general aspect of words. Suchness (真如, *tathātā*, tathata, thusness) transcends the object of expression, only the wisdom of the noble ones can act within it. Name and reason are not different, suchness and the basis are also inexpressible. The basis possesses three natures for everything: the imputed imputation established by expression is the Parikalpita (遍计所执, *parikalpita*, parikalpita, completely imputed), arising from its own causes and conditions is the Paratantra (依他起, *paratantra*, paratantra, other-dependent), the reality established from the beginning is the Parinispanna (圆成实, *pariniṣpanna*, parinispanna, perfectly established). The Parikalpita (遍计所执, *parikalpita*, parikalpita, completely imputed) is called dependent origination, which is the producer and the produced. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
