When that tall old cedar tree becomes nameless, and when this small Lhakhang (temple) becomes like an old donkey's ear, it will be the time for you to become the great ruler of the entire region. Until then, do not disobey my command, go elsewhere and protect the Dharma! Having said this, he placed a sky-iron vajra on his head and bestowed upon him the secret name "Gyalchen Tashi Dorje" (རྒྱལ་ཆེན་བཀྲ་ཤིས་རྡོ་རྗེ།, Victorious Great Auspicious Vajra), empowering him as the future protector of the Dharma. Thereafter, his deeds of protecting the Dharma at Palpung (དཔལ་སྤུངས་), the kingdom of Derge (སྡེ་དགེ་) (now Derge County in Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province), and Kathok Monastery (ཀཿཐོག་), etc., are known to all. Later, when the immaculate descendant of the great Sakya (ས་སྐྱ་) master, Khon Dom Jetzunma Matam Drinwangmo (མཁོན་སྟོན་རྗེ་བཙུན་མ་རྟ་མགྲིན་དབང་མོ), was traveling in Dokham Selung (མདོ་ཁམས་བསེ་ལུང་), all the people of the Se region were afflicted with a virulent plague. All the monasteries requested Jetzunma (རྗེ་བཙུན་མ་) to perform a ritual, and she agreed and began to perform it. At that moment, the entire three thousand worlds were shaking, and after a while, in a tent filled with dark smoke, there appeared an unbearable, radiant light, with a reddish-brown body, like an angry king. Inside, he wore a white secret garment, and outside, he wore a reddish-brown cloak, with a mirror hanging on his chest, and on his head he wore a black hat adorned with golden skulls, sun, moon, and flame patterns. His right hand held a blazing wish-fulfilling jewel that effortlessly granted all desires. His left hand held a white banner-spear adorned with ropes, iron hooks, and lassos. At the end of the lasso was tied a Dharma enemy who was drunk and vomiting blood from his mouth. His two feet were pressing down on a male and female Dharma enemy facing downwards. He stood on a lotus and sun-moon throne, appearing in a posture that effortlessly accomplished the four activities. He said, "This is because this place has not relied on me as a protector. In the past, the land of Drung Choje (དྲུང་ཆོས་རྗེ) was a rocky hill, and joyful songs echoed in the meadows. When Dzongtse Monastery (རྫོང་རྩེ་དགོན་) becomes nameless, and when Tso Dilkhar (མཚོ་དིལ་མཁར་) becomes like an old donkey's ear, I was appointed as the master of this place. If you worship and praise me, diseases and conflicts will cease, and I will give you great help and support." Having said this, Khon Jetzunma Matam Drinwangmo (འཁོན་རྗེ་བཙུན་མ་རྟ་མགྲིན་དབང་མོ) empowered him in the mandala where the great Hayagriva (རྟ་མཆོག་) plays, and appointed him as the protector of the Dharma. Thereafter, he assumed an arrogant posture.
