The body appears as light, and all external objects such as earth, stones, mountains, and rocks also appear as light, with colors of white, yellow, red, and green. Within that, in the center of bindus and subtle bindus, the mandalas of the forty-two peaceful deities and the fifty-eight wrathful blood-drinkers, from as large as Mount Meru to as small as a mustard seed, appear as countless forms. The sound is like a thousand dragons roaring at once, making you feel as if your head is about to burst. From the hearts of those deities, rays of light in the form of weapons shine intensely, unbearable to the eyes, and appear to threaten you. These uncertain and distorted perceptions are the bardo of dharmata, so recognize them. Do not be frightened by the sound, do not be terrified by the form, do not be intimidated by the light, and do not be afraid of the rays. The yidam deities residing within you are coming to welcome you in the bardo. Take refuge! Do not diminish your compassion! In general, protect us from the suffering of the three realms of samsara, especially the three lower realms, and in particular, from the suffering of the deluded appearances of the bardo. Please be the noble guide who leads us to the pure realm of great bliss. By praying in this way, you will be liberated and become a Buddha, inseparable from the minds of those deities. If you do not recognize those peaceful and wrathful deities, and you become frightened by the sound, light, and rays, and try to escape, you will be chased wherever you go. Eventually, your own appearances will arise as demons, the peaceful ones will appear as Black Mahakala, and the wrathful ones will appear as the nature of Yama.
