Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the grove of Nyagrodha trees in the place of Serkya in the land of the Shakyas. At that time, a young man possessed by Rahula was lying in bed, terrified by a Rakshasa. Then, that young man possessed by Rahula, after the night had passed, was surrounded and escorted by many young men, and having come from the place of Serkya, went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, sat before him, and wept. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable Ananda, "Ananda, for the sake of protecting the young man possessed by Rahula, recite the vidya-mantra called Mekhala, and you shall hold it! The hosts of gods, the hosts of nagas, the hosts of yakshas, the hosts of rakshasas, the hosts of asuras, the hosts of garudas, the hosts of kinnaras, the hosts of mahoragas, the hosts of flesh-eaters, the hosts of pretas, the hosts of kumbhandas, the hosts of pisacas, the hosts of planets, the hosts of constellations, the twenty-eight yaksha generals, the four great kings, the sages free from desire, those dwelling in the snowy mountains, and whatever beings abide in the ten directions, the hosts of sisters, Bali, Katalidi, Bodari, Grongna, Yizang, the great ravishers, and all the hosts of Mamo, listen to me! The guardians of the ocean's retinue, in the eastern direction is the Rakshasi named Ravisher, in the southern direction is the Rakshasi named Cow-Nose, in the western direction is the Rakshasi named Hair-Knot, and in the northern direction is the Rakshasi named Earth-Crest. This mantra of Mekhala is spoken by the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-Tathagatas of the past, for the benefit of sentient beings, for their happiness, and for the sake of protection and concealment. Other great sages have also spoken it. Venerable Ananda! The mantra of Mekhala benefits sentient beings. Whoever is engaged in sinful deeds, steals glory, and dwells on the earth, all of them, upon hearing the mantra of Mekhala, become extremely frightened and go to all directions and intermediate directions. Venerable Ananda! Having well grasped the mantra of Mekhala, make a protection of twelve yojanas in all directions. Make complete protection, complete acceptance, complete nourishment, peace, and make auspicious well-being. Homage to the Buddha. Abandon faults. Turn away weapons and destroy poisons. Turn back the unfriendly. Make boundaries. Bind with thread. Turn back all hatred. Do not whip those who commit sins, whether human or non-human. Homage to the Buddha.
