At one time, the Blessed One was in the abode of Avalokiteśvara on Mount Potala, surrounded by a retinue of countless, immeasurable bodhisattvas. At that time, the Noble Avalokiteśvara rose from his seat, folded his palms, and said to the Blessed One, "I have such a dhāraṇī, called the Great Compassionate One, which pacifies all the non-virtuous sins, extremely heavy obscurations, demonic influences, and fears of all sentient beings. For the sake of completely fulfilling all desires, I will speak it." After requesting permission from the Blessed One to speak, the Blessed One said, "Son of good family, the time has come for you to speak the dhāraṇī through the door of great compassion. Please speak quickly, and I and all the Buddhas will rejoice." May I swiftly cross over with the boat of wisdom! I prostrate to the great compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly escape from the ocean of suffering! I prostrate to the great compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly obtain the path of the feet of discipline! I prostrate to the great compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly climb the mountain of nirvāṇa! I prostrate to the great compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly go to the unconditioned home! I prostrate to the great compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly become equal to the Dharmakāya! If I climb the mountain of swords, May the mountain of swords collapse by itself! If I encounter boiling water, May the boiling water extinguish itself like fire! If I go to the hell of sentient beings, May the hell of sentient beings dry up by itself! If I go to the realm of pretas, May hunger and thirst be satisfied! If I go to the realm of asuras, May evil thoughts be subdued by themselves! If I go to the realm of animals, May I myself obtain great wisdom! Having made such aspirations, with one-pointed mind, may I recite my name and remember. Furthermore, reciting the name of my teacher, the Tathāgata Amitābha, and then reciting this dhāraṇī once or up to seven times, will eliminate and purify the heavy misdeeds that accumulate through hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas. If one recites and upholds this Great Compassion (mantra), at the time of death, the Tathāgatas of the ten directions will come there and extend their hands, and according to one's wishes, one will be reborn in whatever Buddha-field one desires. The Bhagavan also declared thus: "Bhagavan, if any sentient being recites and fully upholds this Great Compassion vidyā-mantra, if they should fall into the three lower realms, may I never attain perfect enlightenment." If they recite and fully uphold this Great Compassion vidyā-mantra, if they do not obtain immeasurable samādhi and fearlessness, may I never attain perfect enlightenment.
