Ultimately, not reaching the goal leads to regression and decline. There are two types of regression: ultimate regression and non-ultimate regression. Ultimate regression refers to the inability to practice or diligently engage in the Dharma that prevents regression after generating the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhicitta. Non-ultimate regression refers to generating Bodhicitta and then practicing whatever Dharma there is and diligently engaging in it. There are four types of Bodhisattva conduct: A son or daughter of good family, upon hearing or seeing the inconceivable qualities of the Buddhas or Bodhisattvas, will develop faith and aspiration, thinking, "The qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are inconceivable, and these inconceivable qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are to be attained, so I must attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi." Therefore, with single-pointed mind, they remember Bodhi and generate Bodhicitta. Some, even without seeing the inconceivable qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, develop faith and aspiration merely by hearing the essence spoken by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Having developed faith, they generate Bodhicitta in order to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi and the state of omniscient wisdom. Some, without seeing the inconceivable qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and without hearing the Dharma spoken by the Buddhas, if they see the sacred Dharma declining, they will think, "This unsurpassed Dharma of the Buddhas pacifies the immeasurable afflictions of sentient beings and brings about happiness and benefit. Only the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can make it last long and not decline. Now I too will generate Bodhicitta, and in order to completely abandon the afflictions of all sentient beings, even if my body experiences great suffering, I will make the Dharma of the Buddhas last long in the world."

From the ground, generating the mind of Bodhi, some, even without seeing the decline of the Buddha's teachings, but seeing the beings of the evil age with extremely heavy afflictions, such as desire, hatred, and ignorance, as well as shamelessness, impudence, stinginess, jealousy, anger, strife, disbelief, doubt, laziness, and so on, these objects of affliction, they would think: now is an extremely evil time, these beings do not practice virtue, in such an evil time, even the mind of the two vehicles cannot arise, let alone generating the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? Thinking like this, they generate the mind of Bodhi. Having generated the mind of Bodhi in this way, they also strive to make all beings generate the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. After that, the Bodhisattva Joyful King said to the Bhagavan: World Honored One, the Bodhisattva knowing and repaying kindness is that I have generated the mind of Bodhi. The Bodhisattva repaying kindness is to cause other beings to generate the mind of Bodhi. World Honored One, how did the Tathagata generate the mind of Bodhi in the past when you were in samsara? The World Honored One replied: Son of good family, in the past countless kalpas, I wandered in the cycle of birth and death, and with the great afflictive karma of body, speech, and mind, I experienced the eight great hot hells. For example: the hell of Aha beings, the hell of Alala beings, the hell of Aca beings, the hell of boiling copper pot beings, the hell of great boiling copper pot beings, the hell of black stone beings, the hell of great black stone beings, up to the hell of the fire chariot. At that time, I fell into the hell of the fire chariot, and one or two hell guards were pulling the fire chariot. The hell guard Awang was sitting on the chariot, widening his eyes and clenching his teeth, blowing fire. Fire was blazing from his mouth, eyes, ears, and nose. Thick smoke billowed, and the hell guard's body was extremely tall and black, on the chariot.

I was sitting cross-legged, holding an iron rod in my hand and hitting me. At that time, I couldn't bear the pain, and pulled the cart with all my strength. One of my friends was weak and unable to pull the cart, so the hell guard Awang took a three-pronged iron spear and stabbed it into his chest. The iron clanged and blood rained down. At that time, that person couldn't bear the pain, and let out a huge groan. Some called out to their parents, and some called out to their wives and children, but it was all in vain. At that time, I saw him suffering such great pain, and I felt compassion. In this way, due to the great compassion that arose, I generated the mind of enlightenment. Then, for the sake of that suffering person, I prayed to the hell guard Awang, please generate a little compassion for this suffering person. The hell guard became furious and generated anger, took a three-pronged iron spear and stabbed it into my neck, and ended my life there, thus liberating me from the hell of the fire cart and purifying the non-virtuous karma of hundreds of kalpas. In this way, I generated the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment mind, and thus was liberated from the hell of the fire cart. The Blessed One said to King Gawa: At that time, the one who pulled the fire cart was me now. Because I generated the mind of enlightenment, I quickly attained Buddhahood. Therefore, the reason why all sentient beings generate the mind of enlightenment is not only one. Some arise from compassion, some arise from hatred, some arise from generosity, some arise from stinginess, some arise from joy, some arise from sorrow, some arise from desire and separation, some arise from encountering enemies, some arise from relying on virtuous friends, and some arise from evil friends. Some arise from seeing the Buddha.
