Chapter Four, entitled "Generating the Mind of Enlightenment." Chapter Four, entitled "Generating the Mind of Enlightenment." At that time, in that mandala of the assembly, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Joyful King rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms joined, bowed to the Blessed One (Sanskrit: Bhagavan, Romanized Sanskrit: bhagavat, Tibetan: བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས།, Literal Chinese meaning: Possessing Bhagavat) Gana-va, and asked the Blessed One (Sanskrit: Bhagavan, Romanized Sanskrit: bhagavat, Tibetan: བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས།, Literal Chinese meaning: Possessing Bhagavat) thus: "How does a Bodhisattva know kindness? How does one repay kindness?" The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Joyful King: "Son of good family, listen well! A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who knows kindness is one who generates the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Repaying kindness is to cause all other sentient beings to generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment." He asked: "What is meant by generating the mind of enlightenment, and how does one generate it? By what cause does a Bodhisattva generate the mind of enlightenment?" Son of good family, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva first generates the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, he makes this great vow: "When I attain unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, I will surely establish all sentient beings in great Nirvana. Furthermore, I vow to perfect the Prajnaparamita for all sentient beings." This is called benefiting oneself and others. Therefore, one who initially generates the mind of enlightenment is said to possess the cause of enlightenment, to possess the cause of sentient beings, to possess the cause of true meaning, to possess the thirty-seven dharmas of the factors of enlightenment, and to be the basis for accumulating all virtuous dharmas. Therefore, a Bodhisattva is called virtuous, called greatly virtuous, and also called the root of virtue of all sentient beings, called the one who tames the body, speech, and mind karma of all sentient beings, for by taming the three evil karmas, in the world

No aspiration surpasses the generation of the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened mind of enlightenment; therefore, aspiration is supreme and most excellent. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva initially generates the mind of enlightenment, they should possess five things. What are the five? They are nature, conduct, sphere of conduct, qualities, and generation. If a Bodhisattva generates the mind of enlightenment in this way, they are called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, and without doubt, they will attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment and practice the Great Vehicle. Therefore, initially generating the mind of enlightenment will gather all virtuous dharmas. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having generated the mind of enlightenment, will attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment according to their practice. If the mind of enlightenment is not generated, then enlightenment will never be attained; therefore, generating the mind of enlightenment will obtain the basis for the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva sees sentient beings tormented by suffering, they generate a mind of loving-kindness and compassion. Therefore, the Bodhisattva, with the mind of loving-kindness and compassion as the cause, will generate the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment. By the cause of generating the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment will be accomplished. By the cause of accomplishing the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment will be attained; therefore, generating the mind of enlightenment is called the basis or root. Generating the mind of enlightenment will lead to practicing the precepts of a Bodhisattva; therefore, generating the mind of enlightenment is called the root. It is also called a limb, also called gathering, also called order, also called seed. The generation of the mind of enlightenment by a Bodhisattva is also either ultimate or not ultimate. That which leads to the attainment of the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment, never turning back or diminishing, is ultimate.
